cam chain replacement

Just about to tackle replacing the cam chain in my ZXR 750 1992 model 90,000kms
got a few questions
should i use a genuine chain or quality aftermarket one?
should i use a one piece chain or a joiner link? (where should i get it)
should i replace all the chain guides or just some?
any other hints or tips will help

If you can, get an OEM linkless chain from Kawasaki. The chain is spinning pretty fast and a weak link would destroy the valves and piston tops. As for other parts such as guides, tensioner etc. inspect them. If they look good leave them, if there worn replace. The main thing is to follow what your maintenance manual says as the position of the cams in relation to the crankshaft is very important. If you spin a cam while the pistons are TDC you will bend valves. Double check your timing marks after you get it all on. One link off can cause an engine to run like shit, or more links off can cause the valves to hit the pistons. Good luck.

Just had a good look at my chain and its still got a bout 1/4 life left in it but from what i can see i need to take the engine out and split the motor to replace the guides. Am i correct here

I have not worked on a zxr750 before but if you are going into the engine I would buy a service manual and it will tell you all the things you need to know. I don't think your block splits however, as the last manufacturor to do that was the old Triumps of the sixties. A split block creates a weakness that is hard to overcome so they make the blocks one piece. You might have to pull the head and the crank cover but as I said i don't know???? Sorry.
