Depends on the data provider and what radio you are listening to etc. for example tpg offers live tv over the net, and this doesnt count to our usage because its a service they offer.
Bigpond has a lot of websites and downloads that doesnt count towards usage also. This stuff is generally held within the bigpond network so the data is not being obtained from an external source, ie the world wide web.

But if i were to go to the nova website and stream their broadcast over my computer, the data would count because its not a service offered by my provider.

if you can provide more detail about what you are trying to i may be able to tell you

Rooster I listen to Sydney AM stations a fair bit and the amount of data is quite small for an hours radio. :kuda:

the TPG thing was given for free to existing customers a while back. but yes i think now you have to pay for it.
Kev i cant remember off the top of my head where i clicked to go view it but its on the tpg website, i had logged in with my account to access it.
Cant check now as i am at work, if someone doesnt link you up by the time i get home ill post it up.

Thing to remember is EVERYTHING that comes to you pc over the internet is your data.

(unless your isp says it isn't like Mr Wasabi said)

Other places where people get caught out is VOIP phones = Internet Data
Windows and other software doing updates = Internet Data

Sooooooooooooo I gather then that it is going to count as data useage? All I wanted to do was to listen to some decent Classic Rock stations from overseas that were broadcasting on the web, not interested in watching TV or stuff just listening to good music at work and therefor dont want to run the risk of piling up their data useade or inadvertently increasing their costs.

yep you will be piling up their data usage.

live streaming of any type of media is blocked at our work, for that very reason

Do a trial. Listen for an hour (and do nothing else on the net) and see how much data is used. If it fits with your limits easily enough then your OK but if you are at your data limit already then you can either up your limit or not listen...simple decision really.

install a software product like "du meter" (there are plenty of freeware equivalents out there, but i use version 3 of this at home) and it can tell you your usage stats, both live in a little graph, in a little tally per day, per month, etc. also has a quota alarm that can notify you when more than x megabytes of data have been downloaded that day.
