Hi all,
Well I have again updated the pipes on my road and track bike.. this time I feel I have the exact combination of looks and performance that I was after...!! So The GRAVES Motorpsorts pipes are all fitted and ready to go. I had to do a bit of fibreglass trimming for it to fit perfectly with just the clearance I required, but even that looks factory..!!
Interestingly the pipe dimensions are quite different as are the dyno graph figures. The Akrapovic, M4 and Graves pipes all start off with a 54mm collector pipe at the main junction, the M4 stays 54mm all the way into the muffler, but again gets larger finishing off with almost a 60mm bore.. very large but a great deep sounding note (but perhaps not enough back pressure?) The Akrapovic is also a large bore pipe at 54mm but the muffler bore reducing to around 52mm, but a much longer muffler (so it's quieter with that well known akrapovic note). Where the Graves starts at 54mm, reduces to 52mm at the muffler then reduces again to 50mm for the muffler bore.. This reduction definitely causes more back pressure, hence more low to mid tourque boost. With a mid boost coming in from 6000 to 10,000 rpm. So a much smoother line with the mid range filled in. The Graves still sounds really tough, but slightly higher in pitch than the M4 and possibly a bit louder, but all good for the track.
Look they are all very similar, but the graphs definitely show the Graves boosting more in the area where this model is lacking slightly.. Worth a try and looks fantastic. Another thing I noticed immediately is the bike idles much smoother with no surging at all.. Win - Win for me...

Here are some pics of the pipe fitted to the track bike.. Getting some front suspension work done over the Winter break.. so it will be all ready for racing / track days very soon !!
Macca.

Wont the short pipe effect engine performance ..torque wise?.

Brock has made 206 hp at the rear wheel on a "late 10" with a short pipe, you may just have to have the rpm a bit higher to get the results.

Yes the Graves definitely make an excellent system.. the full system is by far the best...
The graphs I have for the Graves 'Slip On' are from the USA model which is restricted quite heavily.. but the European model (and our model) get's a huge boost over the yanks. So these graphs are not exactly correct.. the unrestricted model is some 20 HP up on the USA model... I dont have the actual graph here, but the correct figures that should be there are - 180.3 HP at 13,000 RPM and 104.5 Nm or 77.1 Ft Lbs of Tourque at 11,600 RPM. Still you can see the area's where the Graves fills in, especially in the mid range... I know these figures are no where near as high as Kawasaki first quoted, but remember HP is not everything..
The Akrapovic 'slip on' is almost the same length in total as the Graves slip on, just the muffler is shorter but the link pipe is slightly longer, where the Graves has the shorter link pipe with the longer can. Very similar.
It all makes for interesting reading though.!!

No Wattie I havent had it dynoed yet.. just got it fitted.. but I will be getting it done at some stage over the Winter break.. I am also like you, dont believe all the sales dyno graphs, but I have ran so many pipes on this bike so far and I can tell the difference with the performance, especially at the track.. with my GPS timer and lap graphs...top speeds, lap times and just the general feeling of the bike when pulling hard out of the slower turns... I havent ridden the track with the Graves yet.. so I am keeping my fingers crossed for good weather for the Queens Birthday ride day for the test..!! Then I will report back with more info...

{EDIT} Macca Mstevo What with the drop in the curve after 11.5-12 k I thought these new Gen4's kept making power to redline?? Is the ECU cutting Ignition up there is this what the Yank models ?? Confused Im sure I have seen graphs of GEN 4's pulling hard to 13.5k Interesting must do some reading.
Yeah before and afters with the different pipes would be nice but takes time and money. Makes total sense about the smaller pipes giving slightly more torque.
Seems the new style underneath muffler is choking alot of the newer bikes downlow in rev range.
One thing i have never seen any before and after of is the Yoshi R77d 3/4 system, it's like what the gixer 750 yoshi systems had where a small hotdog is followed by a 360 loop and then up to the pipe. Surely that sytem would be one of the more torqueish setup's around ?
To this day the Crim still has more torque than all the Gens after it down in the low rev range.
Here my GEN 3 with a full Yoshi R77 vs a GEN 1 with Akfro slip on Both have custom maps in there PC3's
Also Super StreetBike magazine got similar results. Its really had to get same day same dyno truth numbers from anywhere now days everyone lies

Hi Pittster,
Yeah those graphs are off the USA model.. it signs off at 11.5k.. bad luck for them, but the European model (which is ours) still keeps making HP right up to 13.5k.. The torque curve is a mystery... I read an article on the Gen 2 verses the Gen 4 model, and they reckon that the Gen 2 engine was better than the Gen 4 as far as power and torque...
So Kawasaki have built an engine that produces heaps of HP, it's a very fast engine, but the torque figures have not grown with the HP. Still the Gen 4 is way better for handling and track set up.. so they have definitely improved there. I just love playing with exhaust systems..

Yeah all the latest motor are sacrificing torque for bigger peak numbers you dont sell bikes unless you get a couple extra hp on each release.
Imagine if the press release was "it has the same but it has more torque down low (que crickets)"
I think they have hit a point in engine design where they have to sacrifice something for more peak power I mean look at the recall of the bmw motor to show that they are getting to the edge of that reliability vs power ratio.
Anyway im sure the gen4 handles better than the last gens how could it not new suspension design
