Where do I start?

G'day all. Have just purchased an 87 GPX250 from Gumtree in need of restoration / rebuilding for $100.00. Ths bike runs and has all the bits and pieces to get it back to life. A couple of questions. Having never restored any type of vehicle but having a sound technical background, where should I start? I imagine firstly I should drain the oil, fuel, coolant and brake lines. Requires cosmetic upgrade, eg fairing, seat etc. Where is a good place to find parts in Perth? Have checked out ebay and there seems to be a huge range of parts available. I have also downloaded the GPX250 manual from this site. However it is for the Ninja 250R & GPX 250R. Is this relevant to my bike?? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I was going to suggest that you buy a cheapie bike for spares - but I see that is what you have! Heh!
I guess you should assess the condition of the engine. Do a compression test first. Then do the servicing items and replace ALL fluids, etc.
Next check safety related chassis items - sort brakes, suspension, swingarm, axles and wheel bearings.
Finally, bodywork is a matter of restoration or streetfighter or whatever you want... set up and get a decent paint job and you are there...
Sorry, I have no idea on sources of parts. eBay is okay though.

what Brett said ( assess condition) then establish what you will need 1 list of s/hand parts & another of new parts
Ebay + findapart.com.au, but as like most of us you will probably end up buying alot from the USA or the UK
the yanks normally give you a decent ankle tap when it comes to freight charges...so keep in mind where it's coming from ...what I found is if it's from the westcoast it's cheaper than the east.
and with your list try and get as many items at the one time from the one dealer to keeep your freight costs down. you can virtually save hundreds or thousand's in my case it you pre plan your purchases...for alot of new parts Z1enterprises are very helpful & reasonable.
good luck with it
