Ferry operators charged with PCA offences - Berowra Waters

19 May 2006

Two men have been arrested and charged after they were allegedly caught operating a car ferry at Berowra Waters while intoxicated.

The punt operates between Berowra Waters Road and Bay Road at Berowra Waters and was carrying six vehicles at the time of the incident.

Police from Kuring Gai Local Area Command met the punt at Berowra Waters Road about 7pm yesterday (Thursday 18 May) following a report from a passenger the boom gate operator appeared to be intoxicated.

Officers spoke with the boom operator before conducting a breath test. The 45-year-old Wyong man allegedly returned a positive blood-alcohol reading.

Police then spoke with the ferry captain about the situation. The skipper, a 42-year-old Killarney Vale man, was subjected to a breath test at the scene and also allegedly returned a positive reading.

The pair was taken to Hornsby Police Station and a breath analysis was conducted on both men.

The boom operator allegedly returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.17, while the skipper allegedly recorded a reading of 0.15.

The men will be issued notices to attend Hornsby Local Court on a future date, charged with operating a vessel with high range PCA.

Do a search on the Herald Of Free Enterprise, a car ferry that failed to lower the bow doors before departure. Car deck flooded with water and the ferry rolled over and sunk.

These dorks may have only got a 6 car ferry, but that's 6 lives in their hands.

mate..most ppl stay in their cars..it could be 6 families of 5..it could be 30 ppl, of which 20 could be kids....and if there sitting in their car when it starts sinking, theres 30 deaths...

if they are providing such a service, they should not be pissed..no matter what ur job, you should never be pissed at work...
