Hi there,

anyone had had any experience with fowles auction group in melbourne?
i am thinkin of pickin up a track bike so it does not need to be able to be registered.
so ultimately i would like to pick up a "statutory write off"?i think..that is stolen or repossed right?

will they go for really cheap becuase they cant be registered again?
im lookin at 1999-2002 ish 600cc bikes...what kind of selling prices can i expect?

That's funny... I spoke to someone yesterday who had a k4 gixxer 750.. he picked it up for 6k and spent 2k on fairing and bits. He said it was an insurance write off.

Don't recall where he got it from though. He lives near coffs and came up here to do the course.

So it sounds like there are some deals out there.

No. Stat writeoff means major structural damage; cracks, abrasion and dents in the frame, for the most part.

Hard to say. At some auctions, you'll get numpties who'll bid up the prices on even the most hopelessly mangled shitheaps, at others you won't.

Again, hard to say. Unless you have a fair bit of experience in fixing up damaged bikes, it'll be a good idea for you to take along someone who does.

fowles auction group has a motorcycle auction day once a month so i will try get to one and see how things are done and get an idea of prices...

just beware, you don't know what has happened to the bike. Look at Varden's adventure into auction write offs. he got half a session out of it before it blew up. repair costs $2k+

i just dont trust these auction peeps lol....
seems like a lot of people have been burned by them....but i guess its not their fault...the buyer gets to inspect it before they bid so..

which reminds me....by "inspection", do they mean you can start it etc?

Probably best contact Fowles or sus out any t&c's at their website, they would be the ppl most likely to know if you can start it, sniff it, root it whatever

When i worked in auctions we always had the keys in the machines for people to start and listen to the motors- those that could be started anyway.
Auctioneers don't burn people, it's people who don't do their homework that burn themselves but i think it's bull shit you can't start the bikes if it can be done with out causing engine damage, you even have to ask if you get a key, Varden said it was $2000 for a ZX10, to replace the whole module, if there is no key supplied.
Also look at sales where a motorcycle is added in, like a clearance sale of a few different business, i saw an RGV 250 being sold in a bunkcrupt photography studio, it was used as a prop and sold for $200. The bike doesn't have to be a wreck to sell really cheap

I think before you consider buying a bike from an auction, go there two or three times to get to grips how the system works.... Go to a couple of the car ones or something if you are in a hurry, get to know the way that people bid, etc etc and THEN set your self a limit and buy something...

Actually I was thinking of doing the same thing.... I know its on a wednesday, but it doesnt say WHICH wednesday...


Have sent them an email asking for the date and the catalogue...

yeah the next one is on on the 30th of this month. so its next week..

if you come too maybe we can help each other out. as long as we not bidding on the same bike
