Can you use Metholated spirits on an o-ring chain?

Post by Stereo »

Hey guys, need to clean my chain, can you use Metho to clean your chain?

I remember finding out that you can use either Metho or Terps to clean the chain, one of those doesnt damage the 0-rings... the other does...

I thought we had a discussion on this not too long ago?

Anyway....read this

Cleaning
If the chain is not too dirty, the operation of lubrication is normally sufficient to clean the chain.

When the accumulation of dirt on the chain (sand, mud, asphalt particles or other foreign materials) is excessive, the chain must be washed with a brush and kerosene. After washing, the chain has to be dried immediately with a jet of compressed air.

After off-road use, when the dirt built-up is heavy, wash the chain with a water jet, then dry it immediately with compressed air.

:!: :!: :!: WARNING :!: :!: :!:

• Avoid the use of steam, gasoline or solvents.
When cleaning O-Ring chains, avoid the use of hard brushes or other methods that could damage the rubber O-Rings (compressed air should be kept at 50 cm/2 ft distance minimum).

• After washing, immediately lubricate the chain as explained in the next chapter.

I buy the $2 can of degreaser from supercheap - it is essentially pressurised kero...does a great job - just spray the chain then let sit for a minute or two, rinse off with water...

Nope. But I do the same thing, and my chain currently has just under 50000km on it. 20k of those are mine.

Then again, I don't often actually clean my chain. Maybe once every 5000km or so.

Just cleaned it.... it came up beaut....

Its amazing how much dirt you pick up on the way to mt gambier and back...

Its also handy sothat you can check every link for cracks and stretching...

No cracks, but I think its about time to replace this chain... I have 34,000 on it now and its a bit stretched in places.... No hurry though... its gonna have to last me at least 2 more months..

Tanya

chains do not always have to be cleaned
..the last one I cleaned was on a mates bike..about 5 years ago
I just keep mine liberally lubed ....

after a ride, when the chain is nice and warm...
spray on the chain lube (Castrol or Belray in my case)
when cool just wipe off excess
...done
(and that method means very little will get on the wheel next ride)

hth

cheers
GOTTA LUV the 12R!!
