VN250 Mods
I am looking for some mods to do to a VN250. I know that stacks of people have told me not to mod it as I will only have it for 15 months, but I still want to.
So what are some mods that I can do to it, eg make it more responsive, better exhaust, better though the twisties. There has to be something beacuse if you really want to you can "hot Up" any engine.

Easiest mod is when you trade it in on something bigger...
You could spend a lot of money modding a 250 and it will only ever really go like a modded 250. No matter what kind of 'power' figure you get for it, it wont ever have a lot of torque, and that is really what is going to make the difference.

Steal a ZX10R Rob a bank & hand yourself into the police the next day it will be more fun & far less Painful champ. Oh & take your soap on a rope to jaol with ya.
Seriously a VN is a long way from a performance bike even with headwork,zorst,jetting,braided brake lines its still going to have the geometry of an Arm chair & get dusted up by two stroke 125cc's bikes.
Take buying the wrong bike "on the chin" save up n get a zxr250, trust me you'll be so far ahead money wise in 6 months time as well as having something capable of teaching you how to ride corners.

ok i ahev been tehre done that.
honestly keep it stock, we converted my gpx to single exhaust so 2 into 1, re jetted the carbie, put stacks on it instead of the air box, re tuned the engine, and gues what, all of this was custom made aswell for the bike....
its all back stock now, except teh exhaust.
why you ask.
because it ran like shit, basicly, wasnt worth it for the extra 5 hp we got, u didnt notice it, cause it was a biatch to tune and keep maintained, and it was great as long as you kept it full throttle, any thing like twisties and it strugelld,
now it goes great.
so maybe all you can do is, new can, and maybe soem suspension work, i have adjusted mine, rides heaps smooth now.
just wait out teh 15 months,
and if you really wnat to spend money on a bike, buy a bigger one, keep it in the garage and do some work on that.... u wil have less trouble if you do that.
and i will also tell u a modded 250 attracts the cops....so if you like attention form the plod go ahead...

I think I've also read on the ninja250 forum that the bottom end of the EX250 is not really strong enough to cope with any major performance upgrade. I know the VN250 has a completely different engine, but what's the bet that the same design principle applies (ie all parts made only strong enough to cope with the stock output).

my guess is that the engine is very similar to the yamaha xv250 virago engine. SOCH, 2 valves per cylinder, air cooled, one carby, little exhaust pipes inder bigger fake 'shrouds' that look like big pipes. am i right?
if so, i'd say not to bother. you're never going to get much more from it. even if you put tuned pipes, twin carbs, pod filters, shaved the head to 'up' the compression, reprofiled cams, an ignition advancer (if anyone does them), even after all those mods, you might get an extra 10 horsepower. which would be something like a 50% power increase. it would run hot. would have to cost at least $1500+. prolly only run properly on certain days. and wouldn't last very longat all.
i had, um i mean, my girlfriend had, a virago 250. my advice is to flog the tits off it. you might wear your pegs away, but you wont go thru tires or much fuel. and if you can really ride it, its amazing how fast those things will go thru corners. they are understressed engines, so if you leave it stock and change the oil often, you can flog the ass off them and they will go forever.

1. Get good sticky tyres. Make sure your wheel alignment is correct;
2. Set up your suspension properly - does your bike wallow through corners ? Check the owners manual, and set up the compression and rebound damping to suit your weight. This might mean the difference between wallowing through a corner, and gliding through smoothly.....its the simple things that cost nothing that should be all done first.......
3. Make sure your carburettion is correct. A *sports* zorts might sound good, but unless its jetted correctly, is a total waste of money.....
and all the advice about saving your money, for mods on a much better bike, are 100% correct......you can't polish a turd.......
