newbie ZZR250 owner - advice please

Gday all,

Ive just picked up my ZZR250 after riding a Suzuki Bandit 250 for 6 months.
Very different feel to the Bandit but after a couple of long rides in the rain I had to have a fairing.

Couple of ?'s:

1. My right blinker doesnt blink. Just stays on. Left works fine.. Where is that device that does the blinking ( cant remember its name)? Is it near the rear brake light?

2. the ZZR has a temp gauge and coming home in the extreme heat today it was creeping up to the max. while at the lights.. Once moving it quickly went down again.. If stuck at the lights and its at max should I be turning the engine off? or just ignore?

3. No fuel gauge on the ZZR. How the hell do I know when im low.. Just wait until I hit reserve? Or can I rig up a light...


btw, is there a downloadable manual anywhere? I found the link to the Japanese ZZR site but it would be nice to have english..

Re the blinker - just out of interest, have you checked that all lights (dash, rear and front) are functioning?

I've never seen my bike get up towards the top end of the temperature gauge. Was the fan running OK? It could even be that the radiator needs a flush.

As far as the fuel issue goes, you've got two trip meters. Just reset one of them every time you refill. You should get at least 250km after filling up before needing to switch to reserve, and a lot of the time I get well over 300km before reserve. I think trying to put in a gauge or a light is going to be much more trouble than it's worth.

1. Check that a globe is not blown. Blinker only usually stays on if the other globe is busted or not plugged in.

2. I'd check your connections to the radiator etc, and make sure theres enough coolant in it. other than that - just ignore it

3. dont bother rigging up a light, there is already a fuel light. Usually does well over 200km's close to 300 i believe before needing fuel (someone who actually rides one and doesnt just work on them will be able to answer)

4. Manual? should be any manual for a EX250 motor for motor bits, the suppliment for the zzr should be downloadable somewhere as well

Fuel light? Where???

My 2001 ZZR has a spot on the dash where they've made space to put a light, but there's nothing in the manual about a low fuel light (at least, not that I can remember anyway!)

Ill have to go check the blinker globe and the radiator fan and coolant when it stops raining...

My bike is a '96 and it looks as if in either '95 or '96 they have ditched the fuel light..

Not too worry I only ever got around 220km on the Bandit and ive been told by various owners that I should expect close to 300kms...

my gpx250 gets roughly 25km/L. I filled last time after doing 260km's and it took 11L of fuel. 400km to a tank....happy with that :)

If my ZZR gets anywhere near that sort of economy ill be wrapped.

It stopped raining along enough to have a look at the blinker.. Globe was fine tested it on the left side and was fine.. After a couple of minutes poking around I notices a plastic wire clip floating in the wind.. Found its mate and i have a full set of blinkers..

Tomorrow ill pull the fairings off and check everything else out..

Also, its it normal for the front end to be so soft and mushy? Im only 75kgs and can else get the front end to bottom out... Looks like ill need a new set of front springs and oil..

You get 400km outta ya GPX? Thats bloody good or ya not riding it hard enough :wink:

duane..are u on drugs??
i dunno bout u, but most blown light globesw ive seen DONT work at alll.....
as for fuel..i wouldnt bother with a light..too much hard work..ussually when it coughs and splutters u change to reserve...

About 80% highway riding, 15% flogging the hell outta it, 5% riding like an old lady....I think the 80% highway riding to and from work does the trick.

Went for a ride again this morning.. Fan is definately working fine.. must be the coolant as the temp is fine when im moving.. As soon as i hit heaps of lights it steadily climbs..

It certaining turns into corners much much easier than the Bandit. I still cant get used to the bike suspension when I hit a bump during a corner.. Kinda unsettles the balance of the bike.

Just keep the throttle steady if she starts to wallow a bit, don't button off, this *generally* will make a bad situation worse.......in corners anyway..
