:D Spent till 3.30pm with my mum (I may be iased, but she is the sweetest mum you could ever have asked for) then jumped on the Hornet. From Young I went to Wombat, Harden n then to Jugiong. This road is mainly new, n is fast flowing turns running up n down hills and alongside creeks. It is plod free usually too, so I dialled some heat into the combuster, n made Jugiong in record time. The tyres got warm on this section But are still wearing well.

In Jugiong, i had to turn right at a T-intersection. While stopped waiting for traffic, someone caught my eye on my left. It was a guy walking along the verandah of the pub. The face, although 25 years older was the same as i remembered. I called out the name of who i thought it was n he responded. Turns out it's an old schoolmate, who is the licensee of the Jugiong Pub! Sooooo naturally i stayed for a few drinks n a chat! Totally weird guys n gals. Spooky! LOL.

After an hr or so i got going. Fwy to sth Gundagi n some food n fuel. Then up to Tumut, tumbarumba, Batlow, Tintaldra then right towards Tallangatta. I had maintained a brisker than average pace on these under plodded rds, so about Tintaldra i ran onto empty. I slowed to $1.20-$1.30 heading for Tallangatta to conserve fuel. N lucky i did too,as about 10k's b4 Tallagatta, Snr sgt Peter Stewart Of the Tallangatta Police was stopped on the side of the rd booking a tin top. Phew!

I mngd to roll in Tallangatta at @7.00pm,to find all the servos closed. So i wandered over to the cop shop to see what the story was, but it was unattended. Not for long! LOL. Who should pull up behind me but the abve mentioned plod! Naturally the first thing he said when i told him i needed fuel, was that i must have been speeding. LOL.
I told him "no, i was sitting on the ton" I didn't say which one!!!!!
Long story short, a local drained some premium unleaded from his ski boat, to get me to Wodonga.

The Hornet now has 4000klms on it, with 1350 since i left Melbourne yesterday. The Metzies are grippin great and wearing really well too, especially considering the pasting i gave them today. Loads of high speed stuff, n they held up well.

Tomorrow I am heading back to Mt Beauty, Bright, Whitfield, Eildon, Mansfield, Taggerty, Buxton, Marysville, Black,n Home. See yas! :P

Homeward bound

Post by Strika »

Spent last night before bed cleaning the leathers, gloves, helmet, and boots from the bug fest that I rode thru that evening. When I arrived in Wadonga about 8.00pm I could barely see thru the visor. To put it into perspective, I had cleaned it at Tallangatta, which is only 40 klms from Wodonga!

I also kept the throttle well checked over that last 40klms as I was weary of the hoppies and the wobblers getting under my wheels. Especially the wobblers. They are solid buggers and damage cars easily, so would hate to see what it would do to my muddaboik!

I got dicked around a little getting accomodation, as the "Recommended" place ended up being out of town, and out of room! So trundled back into town and fell into the first one with the vacancy sign shining bright.

Turned out to be a well kept and comfy room, with an even comfier bed....zzzzzzzzzzz!

Woke late and ended up getting going around 8.15am. Headed out towards Tallangatta again, and then turned for Tawonga and Mt Beauty. This was a nice way to clear the head first thing in the morning. A little bumpy in parts but generally smooth, fast and flowing. I did encounter several School buses, with a few of the teenage girls making rude gestures from the back seat, and one very bashfull teen girl thought it might be nice to push her yet to be completed boobies together and up for me to look at. My Oh my young girls are getting rather errr fulsome very early these days. Along this stretch was also where I encountered a good dose of fresh cowshit! Three seperate places about 3-4 k's apart, and one in particular with a good 1/2 a foot covering which fairly made the bike snap side ways. But that wasn't the real issue, it was the spray that covered my freshly cleaned lastnight Alpine Stars! Once again No Plod!

I turned right just after Tawonga and just before Beauty to pass over the Tawonga gap. I reckon its a toss up between the Tawonga Gap, and the Granya Pass. The Granya probalby gets it by a whisker as it's much, much, much faster!

I stopped in Beauty for Breakky. Poached eggs and pancetta on toast, with a latte`. Very civilised and cosmopolitan for Bright I must say! From there straight down to Myrtleford. And this is where the fun began...sorta!

I had decided to take the alt route to Chestnut, via Lake Buffalo. Sorta glad I did, and sorta not. The run up into Lake Buffalo and about 20 klms on is just horn! But the 25klms Of dirt from there to Chestnut is totally Fucked, and has not faired well over winter. Several corners were washed out with exhaust bottoming ruts Then there was Klms and Klms of really big fuckoff rocks! Then you would get a nice smooth couple of klms of nice hardpack, just to lul you into a false sense of security and then................................Wammo. A series of hairpins covered in 1/2 a foot of bulldust! Kept it interesting I must say. Funny moments include, almost locking front and rear when I had zero traction entering one of said hairpins ans using the sandy bank on the outside of the turn as a berm. Thangod for those Renthal bars I must say. They came in handy on more then one occasion! I took to riding in the "attack" position, which actually worked better, as i just let the big girl walk around under me and the suspension flap about like a beached fish. I was doing this when I came across the first truck in a crew of roadworkers. I stopped for a chat, and he told me that they are up fixing up the very issues I listed above. He didn't tell me that there were more coming behinf him, but I soon found out. The road was a little better from here, as we had descended most of the steep stuff, and were only 6k's from the tar. So I had cranked it up to 120-130 on the straighter stuff, and down to 80 for most of the turns. Then apexing a lefthander, here comes a Grader! Full pelt! Fcuking dust everywhere! Luckily I had tight apexed the turn, and was almost in the spoon drain on the left, and missed it's whopping yellow blade. But I couldn't see for at least 100metres and even slowing as quickly as I dared, I travelled probably another 50metres before I could actually see again!

The tar never looked so good, and I had a ball on the road from here thru Chestnut and on to Whitfield. Nice road, it made the dirt worth it.

The Witfield Mansfield rd was in top nick with feck all traffic, and guess what???? No Plod! I made good time from here and once passed Taggerty and Buxton, wound it up again. I came back down the Black Spur, which was in excellent condition and was tin top free and guess what???? No Plod!

Stopped in Healesville for Fuel and food, and made it back to Che` Strika at 2.00pm

Another 500 klms today so around 1800klms round trip! On the tyre front, the Metzies are working a treat. I had no grip issues at any time, and they are still wearing well so far! I had the guts on the deck thru several corners on the spur and the tyres didn't feel under any stress. Might be different with someone who can really push em, but they worked a treat for me all trip. With almost 2000klms travelled on them, they are in far better condition than the old Hi-sports were after 800klms! They warm up quickly and I had no hesitation in getting stuck in a little early! They also do not appear to have encouraged any nasty handling habits either, which is a bonus. :D

On the bike front, The Hornet hasn't put a foot wrong thus far. It seems to get about 260 per tank when flogging its arse off, and about 300 when touring! The way I have set up the suspension makes real sense when pushing it thru the turns, but is a bit stiff for general touring. I may soften it for longer rides in future.......But it's just such good fun in the squiggly bits....I may put up with it!

Some of the scenery I encountered over the last Three days has been awesome! The ride up to Lake Buffalo I really enjoyed, and yesterdays run from young to Jugiong was also a beauty in terms of scenery. I took no pics, as I couldn't be arsed stopping all the time.

:D Things keep coming to mind from the trip.

There was a group of adventure riders on GS's and one on a Katoom Adventure thingy, who waived me down before the dirt to Chestnut. I stopped for a chat. They thought I was mad, but then again they were old buggers loaded with gear and panniers. So I figured if they could I could.

Wildlife is always interesting. Sheep on the road from Tumut to Batlow. A parrot missed committing suicide by CB900 by a whisker along the Tallanagatta rd from Tintaldra. Thankfully managed to miss him. Another Deer (saw one last time too) over Tawonga Gap. And loads of bunnies on the Rd up to Tawonga too. No snakes!

Other interesting observations.....I probably sat a little too long behind the school bus full of teenage girlies

A bunch of dudes on old nakeds and old brits (Z1000's/Z9's, CB750's, Nortons, Trumpies and I think an old BSA, passed me going the other way on the Whitfield rd. I think I may have frightened the leader. He got a bit wobbly mid turn! Err or maybe he was just on a triumph?

The Nod or wave was a mixed bag. I think it has now become the exclusive domain of the tourers. Most riders out there in the boonies were wavers or nodders. Even a few of the locals gave me a nod from the back of the tractor, side of the road, or in their tin top. Pretty friendly lot really. And yes I looked behind in the mirrors to make sure it wasn't a fist wave or a finger! But once we got within @ 150k's of Melbourne it became rare. And once in the city ...non-existent!

It's really fcuking hard to keep the Hornet at 100-110klms and hour. A small bump and you're doing 140 Nearly caught me out a few times.

1st 2nd 3rd and even to a degree 4th gears are superflous to requirement on the Hornet. Fcukin lazy it is. Granya pass top gear, Tawonga gap 4th on the hairpins then top gear.

Road tyres do actually grip OK on dirt! Thanks Antti. They also didn't tear to shreds like i thought they might. Not bad for two ply tyres.

It's really difficult to make the Hornet tank slap. I even took one hand off the handlebars mid turn to see if i could provoke it...nothing.

I need more ground clearance, and I need to get the fat lazy Hornet turning more to my liking still. It's OK, but pushes the front when in press on mode.

The seat is fcukin comfy.

The Renthal bars are almost perfect, although i will still have a good look at the road bend set when they come in.

The ultra in-expensive Motoline seat pack worked a treat, doing everything it should. Although the zippers do look to be a weak point. I am taking care when opening/closing it, and it appears to be OK so far. And one of the Ocky hook tabs pulled straight off when I attached an ocky strap. Warranty!

It's fcukin dirty filthy and gunky with bugs all over it and dust in every feckin orifice, as well as loads of cow shit!

It does an indicated 240 at full noise 9500rpm,(conducted on a private rd of course under controlled conditions )

It indicates that it pulls past the 9500 rpm red line??? couldn't get the limiter to cut in??? got scared I was gunna hurt it!

Nakeds are really good at picking loose gravel, when the council has tar sprayed. You can hear the little tink, tink, on the headers. It saved me a few times!

The finish on the footrest hangers is worn away from my boots already (4400k's)

I am nearly due for it's 2nd service (6000klms)

I took child bride's Hornet for a 100 mile run last weekend out in the sticks. Headed up to the Burdekin Dam with a few mates and, seeing she went in a car, left the ZRX at the pub for the day.
My observations were similar to yours Strika. Similar top speed, similar suspension reactions.... similar bike! They do lean over a long way, don't they?

Cheers,

  Yeah apart from the Colour, tyres, and lack of a screen, they look Zackary the same funily enough

They lean over a long way, but not quite long enough for my liking. I still gotta get the handling sorted. I am gunna chuck it on it's side one day, literally. I had a few occasions on the ride where a corner was a tad twistier than my brain had calculated initially, so instinct took over and I threw it on its side racer style, and GRAAAAAAAUUUUUUNNNNNNCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHH! The left hand case wasn't far from kising the tarmac (I looked  ) and the pegs were folding up under my feet. I actually had to get off the side of the fcuker and drag the rear brake to make it turn. Big bitch it is sometimes

I don't wanna have to be hanging all over the side of the thing on the road. I like just sitting in the seat and flowing on the road, with not a lot of brake usage, so sometimes, just like the new arsehix has a little over rev capacity, I like a little over lean capacity

I may just bite the bullet and have the shock lenghtened, as the engineers are all a little perplexed as to creating a ride height adjuster???? :?

No worries Brett, glad to help  BTW, don't be a pussy and do the dirt to Chestnut, the road to it and from it are pearlers!

Oh also, read my post on the SBK trip thread, as I have booked some work, and won't be avail for a ride now!

I may be able to meet any late comers on Sat, but can't make anything during next week as I am orf to steak n kidney again, be back Friday Night! :(

Cops areound Coota and Young are really heavy. The road from Young thru Wombat-Harden-Jugiong is a cracker. Wind it up!

Fwy it Jugiong to South Gundagi (10 mins) then head for the hills dude! :D

Watch the Plod Tintaldra to Beauty. Watch for Deer Over Tawonga gap.

There are several patches of newly laid tar n gravel without lines marked, just little tag markers. Do not stress it. I went flat out thru these and as long as you stay in the outer wheel track the grip is awesome. ie: -Right hander in left wheel track, left hander in right wheel track! I warn ya though if your not acurate, it becomes err interesting

On that note, I can't for the life of me get this hornet to fall over on gravel yet, and believe me I have tried :D . It just sorta sorts it before I know it's happened and all that i notice is I am a foot or two off line

Did I tell ya how much I lurve modern day muddaboiks?????

Love yr sig Stereo!

Update #4600 on the Hornet.

The Hornet now has 4600 klms on it. Almost time to trade in again

Yesterdays ride only reinforced the reasons why I bought the Hornet in the 1st place. Comfy, relaxed, fast (enough for moi), with reasonable brakes, great handling but lacking a little ground clearance. :x

The little Motoline seat pack I purchased before the NSW trip, is holding together, with those suss zippers yet to let go. :D

I have also worked out ( I think, as this suspension stuff is still a little of a black art) that the rebound adjuster on the front forks of the Hornet, must be set up with a lot of slow speed rebound and not a lot of high speed. It tends to react OK the the harsh stuff, but follows undulations in the road surface a little.

I only notice it when I am cruising. At full tilt it works perfectly, with the suspension obviously being in a different part of the stroke as it is compressed from the bikes weight in a turn.

I just can't get the balance right . Almost full rebound is perfect when really attacking turns, but then when cruising the front wants to fall away. But then If I back it off a little, it wants to smack me in the chops when I let the picks off entering a turn . I may try and soften the pre-load a touch, and let orf a little rebound next to see if I can find some middle ground. :?

I also noticed a similiar thing with the rear, although the damping is near on perfect, it could be softened one more preload notch methinks. But once again, softening it causes more issues with clearance, so I will leave it till I sort a rear ride height spacer/adjuster. :x

I have gotten used to the bars, and now don't really want to have to get used to another set, so am gunna leave em. Maybe not perfect, but close enough to keep me happy. :D

Yesss really nice except the dirt part which seems to go forever. Nice sliding dirt as shown below in most places but be prepared for 50mm gravel track :?

Hey Strika,
Sounds like you are really enjoying the hornet. How do you like the screen on it? My wifey would like to get one for her steed.
Cheers,
Pete.

P.S. If you have a front on pic with the screen on, could you post that or email it to me?

Yeah It's OK for a Honda Plane.

The screen on mine, is perhaps not the prettiest item I have encountered, however it is very effective. I would rate the protection from this little screen, as near as good as the fairing on my old 636! Cross winds effect it more, but you really don't get any headwinds, or buffetting. I am pretty happy with the screen as such.

Here are some pics for yr wife to peruse!

Thanks Strika!

We'll probably pick up a Hornet screen from Honda. They seem to be the most subtle of the lot.
