Modding the 10..

Post by MadKaw »

Thought I'd get the bits I've been collecting put on the 10 this afternoon..
I'm waiting on Damo to come over with a dremel to mill a peice out of the throttle housing so I can put it back together.

These things are a pain to work on and getting the airbox off is a challenge on its own..
Anyway, I'm adding a 1/5th turn throttle adaptor to the std throttle, to do this you have to get as much cable slack as possible to fit it. To access this the air box has to come of to to get to the lower adjuster.
The throttle pic shows the adaptor fitting over the std one.
While the box is of I figured I'd disconecct the Kleen air. The bottom pic is the routing of the hose from one reed block cover to the other. Previously that went to the air box.

Next is the braided lines.....

1/5th turn from idle to WOT (72 degrees) compared to the standard 1/4 turn (90 degrees). Eveyone who has one raves about them.

I've had one for ages but have never fitted it as it's just about irreversible unless I buy a new return throttle cable as I have to take some of the outer off for the extra slack and I've been taking my 8yo for more rides and I'm worried it might be too snappy. (Especially when there's already only a poofteenth of a degree between being legal and walking :( )

Probably is brilliant for the track or twisties though.

It don't have carby's... :-)

But yes, it means better throttle response and as Steve its said quicker to wide open. With the std 1/4 turn you always need to creep your fingers around the throttle to get the last bit. Not a prob on the road but a pain at the track.
The removal of the KLEEN won't do much other than, hopefully, stop a lot of the popping and backfire by removing any additional air in the system.

So you are doing this because the throttle action is too long? As in, you have to turn the throttle too far.... I need that.... I have to start off with my hand on the throttle with my wrist at 90 degrees otherwise I dont get the last little bit out of the beast....

Please take lots of photos...

All is done and its going fine...

Throttle now 1/5th turn - certainly sharpens the throttle response up. (and I don't need to creep my hand over the throttle to get the last bit anymore..:-))

Kleen system removed - the bike feels much smoother when backing of and has none of the popping or backifiring that it had before, and the mod is free... well worth the effort.! (for track use only of course)

Braided lines added with dot 5.1 fluid - feels better but a good run at the track will confirm things.. It won't be any worse thats for sure..

I also fitted a magnetic sump plug - it was cheap so I figured it may be a good way to see / collect sum of the metal bits that float around in the oil..

All sounds good Dave. I might do the Kleen Air mod to mine. I get some huge backfires when throttling off from >7-8 thou. It's not too much of a problem more just annoying.

I've got my braided lines as well, just need to stick them on. As you noted on the Putty run the brakes on all of them seem to be a tad spongy.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

I was getting some pretty loud backfires out of mine and there all but gone now.. Took it for a good run with Damo yesterday and I'm more than happy with the results..
The hardest part about the KLEEN mod is getting the bloody air box out and making sure all the rubber seals to the ram air are in place.
I have the scars to prove it...

Dunno if its the throttle mod or the kleen removal but it feels like it pulls a little better and runs smoother.... but it feels like that after I clean it too.. :-)

I thought the kleen mod was worth it at least when you are up it you can hear what the engine is doing rather than all that blurting and popping. :D

I had someone else do it because i am lazy and it was due for the 6000km throttlebody sync at the time.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?
