Accident on the way to work yesterday...

Post by Shaman »

Not me (again), but I was riding along down Currie St at peak hour in the morning and we pulled up at some set of lights. Ute was about 2 cars in front of me and a learner on a Cagiva Mito was directly behind the ute.

The ute was a bit indecisive and hammered the brakes at the last instant and unfortunately the conditions (a bit slippery post-rain) and the learner following too closely caused a lock-up on the Mito's behalf and whilst locked up he tried a bit of evasive action but it was too late - he went straight into the corner of the tray of the ute. Bike went down and he stumbled (after impacting with the sharp aluminium corner of the ute's tray) and hit the ground.

I rode straight through the lights (people were now crossing directly OVER him), finding my way through a bunch of people to the other side of the crossing so I could park and help him out.

People WALKED around him - didn't move or do a thing...! Just as I pulled up to get off my bike and help him, the 4WD behind him drove around him and just left him there... if I had my riding boots on at the time I would have kicked that poncy fuck's door in!!!!

Just as I got off my bike, he'd brough the bike back up and seemed ok. I gestured at him to ask if he still needed help and he gave me the thumbs-up and everything was OK.

I just can't believe what people have turned into... I just read ZX9RKing's post about that bitch in the 4WD and I just want to murder people now... this is just fucked - I'm quite sure the guy was injured to some extent, but nobody even MOVED to help him..!!! This makes me very angry.

But then I realise I'm 6'2" and weigh about 75kg and my anger subsides.

So I've started going to the gym

Try being 5'9" and 67kgs :P

I must admit *once* there was an accident that i just narrowly avoided (a car rear ended another car infront of me), i managed to just slip around the side to avoid being involved as well as i got distracted by a mattress that fell off the back of a truck that i just ran over and was checking to make sure it went out the rear of the car as well ;)

It was such low speed - probably 30km/h tops (and traffic was backed up for miles) so i figured i'd be right to move along - given that i made eye contact with both the people involved as i went past and they seemed (at a glance i admit) okay.

I was coming back the other way 10 mins later there was an ambulance, a fire truck and everything! I felt awful, I should've stopped and checked to make *sure* everything was okay instead of assuming it was!!!

I'm sure karma will come back to get me when i least expect tho

Damn makes you angry the way people are so self centred these days that they can't be arsed to offer someone some help when they need it.

I can't understand what it is with people that makes them think showing compassion or offering to help someone is so hard to do. :? I'm betting if a car had stacked and injured the driver then people would be lending a hand though. For some reason the only people that help fallen or broken down riders are other riders.

Good to hear he wasn't too badly injured.

That lack of concern or charity from bystanders is pretty upsetting to read, especially after the way that Les was left to fend for himself after the taxi ran him off the road in Adelaide last month.

Maybe it's just that Adelaide people are not helpful

I once hit the corner of an aluminium ute tray while riding my bicycle when a car cut me off and left me nowhere to go. Years later, there's still a scar line from the gash it left in my arm. Sharp cornered aluminium objects are painful bloody things to run into even at low speed.

everyone just figures someone else will stop cos "im too busy on my way to work to be 5 min late to the job i have hated for the last 15 years, just to feed my little prick kids.

in my first and hopefully last crash, three cars stopped for me and helped me out but that was probably because i'd slid over into oncoming traffic, One guy even offered to take me to hospital if my bike was unrideable(due to us all being learners).
Check out my web page for some pics

Makes ya blood boil doesn't it, seeing everyone just pass around someone who needs help.
Obviously you don't want everyone to stop and jump to his aid, but those in the immediate vicinity, especially that 4wd should do the decent thing.
Even if he's not injured he might need a witness for insurance reasons.

I used to go to the Goodwood Rd/Cross Rd gym a while back ... :?

Considering the price though the equipment isn't that good.

Logan -> good on ya for stopping by the way! i got sidetracked with that first post ;)

I am starting to wonder if it's a bit of an 'Adelaide' thing though to not help out?

That just sux, I do recall seeing on A Current Affiar or something like this I think early last year where they placed people in different conditions to see if anyone would stop and help. They even had one guy lay right near the gutter making out like he was having a heart attack and not one person stopped. Sadly it's what most people have just become, rude and arrogant
