The first part.... the "ZXR" is the factory range....
for example the ZXR is the sports bike, the ZZR is the sports/tourer ....
the number after it signifies the size of the bike..... 2=250cc, 6=600cc, 9=900cc, 10=1000cc etc
the number after these numbers signifies a model difference within that "model"...
So for example lets say they first made the zx2r in 1990.... it would be called a zx2rA1 (usually the A doesnt show up anywhere on the bike)... they might make exactly the same model for 3 years.... but then make some changes.... after that the bike (the bike might look identical, but may have different engine parts etc) will be called a zx2rA2 etc..... When they do a significant change they often change the letter too.... so it would become zx2rB1.... etc etc...
Every manufacturor does this one way or another.... for example, suzuki's currently use K1,K2 etc etc.... My wife has a GSXR600K1..... Honda uses a different system again..... for example the VFR400RR has been the NC21 then NC25 then NC30 etc....

and so the actual model numbers (not the marketing names)
follow on......
with the 7fiddys for example
ZX750D = GPz750(1st model)
ZX750F = GPx750
ZX750G= GPz750 last model
ZX750H = first of the ZXR750 range
etc
or ZX1200a = ZX12r first model
ZX1200B = the current ZX12r
etc
hth
GOTTA LUV the 12R!!

A damn useful piece of information when sourcing parts, insurance companies like to know and it makes you sound bike knowlegable down the pub

I like Suzuki's system. Pretty simple and is carried right across their range. Although I don't know what happened to I, O, Q & U.
