QUEENSLAND motorists caught repeatedly exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 kph will lose double demerit points.
The extra demerit points will apply for second and subsequent speeding offences, starting from next Thursday, state Transport Minister Paul Lucas announced today.
The penalties would be in place all year round.
"Speeding is dangerous, and my Government makes no apologies for penalising drivers who repeatedly break the law and endanger themselves, innocent passengers and other road users," he said.
Fines would not be increased, because it was not a revenue raising exercise, said the minister.
"A driver could easily lose their licence with a repeat offence, which is a strong incentive to avoid speeding."
Last year, speeding contributed to more than 20 per cent of the state's road deaths, said Mr Lucas.
