Abnormal Engine Noise

Post by daffy67 »

After going for a squirt yesterday i have a loud 'knocking' kind of sound coming from inside the motor somewhere.
It's a definite metal on metal sound and increases intensity with revs, prominenlty coming from the left hand side of the motor.

I've had one comment of possible bearings from one place, i have another mechanic coming over next week to give me another opinion.

The motor has not lost power or blown any extra smoke, i gues it could be a number of things but i am fishing for tips from the knowledgeable folks here.

Thanks in advance. :D

Is it knocking or tapping, or a rattly sort of tapping?
How repeditive is it, once per crank revolution say, or more?
You got plenty of oil in her?
How old is the donk?
What suburb you in?

Knocking or tapping, hmm i think it's closer to a knock.
Engine has 84000klm on tripmeter.
Oil was visible in sight glass though not right at the top, from what i've read 3rd rod failure is common if oil is not kept right up to top of sight glass due to starvation.
It's repetitive enough, you won't hear it at idle, start to around 1500rpm. Once over 2000rpm it's quite obvious.
I lIve in Bray park. :D

I'll drop the oil next week on my days off and if i fold gold metal flakes then it's a bearing for sure.

It might be the 3rd rod- as you said a common ZZR fault. Funnily enough my GPZ900, ZZR1100, ZZR12 all had/have gold flakes in the oil- not a definitive way of diagnosing the fault. Alternator chain tensioners shit themselves too- hope it is that rather than #3. Camchain tensioner too, maybe? :?
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

I thought about a cam chain/alternator tensioner, is it on that side side of the engine?(l/h as you sit on it).
If it is that then i'll be happy, just a few hundred $$ instead of thousands!!

probably needs can-chain tensioner adjusted and/or replaced ?? Get it fixed soon, if the camchain or tensioner is loose or buggered, you might be up for *way* more expensive repairs.......
