Clutch

Post by Frank »

Ok after replacing the fluid ( that should be mud ) its time I checked/changes the clutch on the 7, after Bikefest at easter, the clutch was starting to slip on the final couple of runs (it fine on the street ), but I like to fix it before the dyno day.
So my question is how hard/involved is it to change the clutch plates on my ZX7R, and how expensive are the plates generally?
I have worked on my cars over the years and have a pretty good understanding of most things mechanical, but have never done this before, is it something that should be done by a qualified mechanic or can it be done at home in a garage by an amature??

Thanks for any advise

Cheers
Frank

Doing mine soon(pick up parts today....thxs tanya :D ...helps having gf work @ a kwaka shop :) ). I'm lazy so probably get my mechanic to do it. :)

Clutch kit.....8 fiber(friction)plates, 7 steel plates(2.3mm), 6 clutch springs. Also probably not bad idea to replace clutch cover gasket as well.

Handy if you have a manual or access to one.

Basically..
Soak fiber plates in oil.
Remove clutch cover(right side of motor).
Remove clutch spring bolts and springs(6) then hub.
Pay attention how everything is lined up(will help when you reinstall).
Remove all plates.
Install new plates starting with a fiber plate first then alternate(steel next then fiber etc).
Install hub cover and springs.
Make sure hub is flush with last fiber plate(no play in plates)....otherwise clutch will not engage.

I think that covers it. I am sure if i have missed something someone will add to the thread. :)

We did my clutch on the 636 a few days ago & with the Steel plates we put them in with the sharp side all to the outside..

You can feel the difference with your finger, mate is ex bike mechanic & that's what all the info he was given said to do..

The whole clutch kit (that greenmeanie got) including the gasket is about $320, thats retail pricing.

How hard?
On a 7, piss easy.... is that technical enough ?
Seriously but, about as difficult as on an XL250.
Just because you CAN ride, doesn't mean you SHOULD

Thanks for the replies I took mina & greenmeanie's advise and it seems pretty straight forward. I've ordered the clutch kit, just waiting on it to come in and hopfully will have it in on night this week.

Thanks again
