I am rather annoyed that all the responsibility and initiative at the moment really rests at the discretion of the Learner.

You can basically choose to have as much or as little training as you want, be barely competent to operate the windshield wiper and still be sharing the same road as me...grrrr...
Sounds like we are on the same page- I had a client this week decide that he wanted 6 hours of lessons. He hadn't ridden before and it took me two hours to get him on the road with full instruction on controls of the bike, starting/ stopping, clutch use, steering, gearchanging and braking. I told him he would need at least 10 hours (in reality more than that) and he postponed (or went elsewhere) his lessons because he reckoned he couldn't afford that- he is looking at a $3000 bike, but doesn't want to spend $350 (ten hours in Toowoomba) on his motorcycle tuition. No wonder people are crashing so often in Queensland- with Q-Ride many are let go with licences without REALLY being competent in the Q-Ride competencies and can ride whatever capacity bike they wish. Scary stuff. :D

I will go a bit further bonester and say that driving schools dont teach their students collision avoidance and roadcraft and i am talking in a car here.
My school does. (I teach auto car- don't have time to do manual too with the bikes.) It is in the driving test but because it is difficult to assess (or the testing officers can't be bothered, in some cases) it slips by. It isn't that hard to do- it is just some people don't see the value in it, or can't be bothered because ' it will never happen to them.' :cry:

Oh and it isn't just the 17 year olds- I teach a wide range of people (oldest so far 68 years old) hazard recognition and crash avoidance on the bike- it gets an appreciative nod and agreement, and takes about 20 minutes to go over the basics, but it is almost NEVER practiced. :shock:

I learnt some stuff at a advanced driving course at lakeside many years ago it wouldnt have taken more than an hour to do with 20 cars but it has saved my arse a number of times.

Trackday trackday trackday can anybody say trackday :D ....could be bad i dont know but i hit a huge patch of diesel in the city got all sideways at the rear and got my arse out of the seat and went to stick my knee down as i was exiting the skick :D I put it all down to the fact that it was just a greasy patch of diesel no water added or i could have been on my bum. :D

I dont know how good its going to be if the bike trys to fall over and i try to pick it up with my knee wearing jeans. :shock:

Of course not everybody rides a sports bike theres plenty of cruisers out there and i have been smoked by a few scooters.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?
