Helmet laws...and fatalities

Post by Smitty »

interesting this one
(from todays paper)

in 1999 Florida (USA) had a compulsory helmet law-
both rider and pillion had to wear helmets
(unlike 27 of the other US states where they were optional)
then
Clem Bush (yeah him is related to George Dubya) was governor
and signed a law...making helmets optional

the result?
total motorcycle fatalities in 1999 were 22 (for the state of Florida)
but
in (calendar) 2005 there were 251 fatalities
19 of those killed were wearing helmets
all the other riders killed were NOT wearing helmets

now...and this is my opinion
given that there probably was an increase in the numbers of
riders/bikes since 1999 ('coz motorcycling is getting more popular)
part of the increase in fatalities would relate to that increase in riders
however
the rest of the increase in deaths must relate to riders previously
not being killed becoz they wore helmets... who are now dying
becoz they aren't

as I said...interesting
and maybe a conclusion...helmets save lives

cheers

almost tempted to say make it optional for helmets and seatbelts, then watch the idiot levels in the population slowly decrease.

Oh aside from the draconianisms that'd kick in as a result too......

The world is full of idiots that the government has to save by legislating stupidly obvious things. I'd always wear a belt, same oes for a lid, i just dont want to risk getting hurt otherwise.

well thats shows you common sense is uncommon.

mm head hiting road at 30mph aint gonna be pretty, atleast with a lid on you have some protection.

i feel naked when i ride without a helmet, ok that ride involbes backyard into garage. about 5 meters.

its habbit go to bike helmet on.

i agree with mike.

but lets make sure that these fatalaties cant sue against lack of legislation.

On a serious note, what happens if a rock hits u in the eye or u have a sand truck up ahead and sand is blowing back into ur eyes and u have to close them cos something has gotten in ur eyes.

Eyes are very important. i wouldnt risk them.
