no more Fat Posties...on bikes?

Union objects to 90kg weight limit for posties
Tuesday, 20 June, 2006
By Xavier La Canna

The battle of the bulge has a new frontier - Australia's mail delivery.

Australia Post has drawn the ire of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) after its policy of only hiring people under 90 kilograms to deliver mail became known. According to the organisation, any heavier and the staff are too big to safely operate the motorbikes most posties use to deliver the mail.

But the union today hit back, drawing on well-known footballers who tipped the scales above the limit to highlight what they say is an arbitrary weight limit.

"Nathan Buckley (91kg), Matthew Lloyd (92kg) and Nick Riewoldt (92kg) would automatically fail despite their obvious fitness and athleticism, exposing Australia Post's claims for the nonsense that they are," said CWU secretary Joan Doyle.

Ms Doyle said no current workers she was aware of had been affected by the move but the union would fight any decision to sack an existing worker who lost their job after breaching the weight limit.

New staff wanting to be posties should be offered bigger motorcycles and more flexibility in mail delivery, Ms Doyle said.

Australia Post is not taking the allegations lightly. Spokeswoman Lea Jaensch denied it was discriminating against hefty Australians.

She said the organisation was constrained by laws that meant postal workers could only travel on footpaths to deliver mail using motorbikes if the vehicles were a maximum 110cc capacity.

These motorcycles can only carry 130kgs safely, and with extra safety machinery and the mail itself weighing 40kgs, 90kgs is the largest people could be, she said.

She said if existing staff went over the limit they would be offered jobs elsewhere in the organisation. "We need to ensure that when we hire people they can utilise the equipment," Ms Doyle said.

my uncle ahs been a postie for 40 somethings years, and he told us about this rule..

but seriously, those postie bikes are pretty small, a 100+kg man would look funny me thinks

Kellz its not just the 100 kg postie .....think about all the cargo as well  Ive seen our regular postie at the start of his run & there is mail oozing out of every bag on his bike
Wonder what the total weight rating is for a CT110

IMO say put a limit on the ammount they can carry to cancell the effect of the extra KG's the postie might weigh... seems logical

yeh i agree,
the amount of mail they carry is insaine, raise the rider weight lower the carrying weight and you get more guys/ girls on the job and it will be done just as quick if not quicker.

hey i learnt to ride on an old postie, it was fun for paddock bashing.

[devils advocate]
think of this too, cost vs benefit

cost
more people on the road, more bikes to register, more fuel consumed, more pay packets to send out, less efficient postal runs (more runs back to base for a reload, more people doing these said runs back to base)
benefit
faster postal delivery.

that is just a 30 second think & appraisal of why it's like it is.

Then again im 70kilo's and wouldnt feel too concerned about running about on a postie, 90 may be pushin the friendship with the bike, 120kilo's, uhm, i'll honestly pass.

from a reliable source they are going to cut back on bikes due to the cost of training people that then leave the job

but lets be serious , most footy players are 6ft plus , would get a bit uncomfortable doing the job if you were that height

ffs next we are going to hear about footy players complaining that they cant be jockeys

Well done union!
Let the 'overweight' posties keep their jobs and carry on.
Wait till someone gets hurt in an accident, or even worst, die (due to overweight).

So what if you are an athlete or is fucking fit?
Every vehicle has a weight limit. Every job has its own restriction.

I think it is very obvious that CWU secretary Joan Doyle is the right person for her job.
I'm sure she thought about OH&S when she made that comment.

Sorry, rant over, sometimes ppl's stupidity just pisses me off...

i can see AFL footballers who make $200,000 a season wanting to be posties & earn $30k a year riding round in the rain...farking wankers they are...
lightening the carry load does nuthing to improve our mail service..the bikes have a 130kg limit, so how is it unfair to not adhere to it??

if ur not this tall ___ u cant ride the ride....

if ur not 18, u cant buy alcohol....

if ur over 90kg , u cant ride the postie bike

farking simple really...
and if ur over 90kg & take offence to be called a fat bastard....then maybe its the kick in the pants u require to get off ur ass & do something abt ur weight before it kills u...

rant over..
