96 ZX7R front shock adj

I got a p model ZX7R 96....it has a rebound adjustment down at the wheel near the 3 pot calipers....is that normal or standard?

Compression up top(screws op top of forks), rebound(down bottom of forks)........normal yes.

This is what i am using at the moment.......front preload-4 rings showing, front rebound - 9 clicks out, front compression - 4 clicks out, rear dampening(rebound) - pos 3, rear compression - 19 clicks out.

thanks greenmeanie,

I have been playing around with the settings. At first I didn't realise that the rebound adjustment was even there! So I'm just seeing how each click effects the handling and by how much.
I live with fear everyday but on weekends she lets me ride.

I could be wrong, but i think the rebound is on the top and compression down the bottom. The L models have rebound only and that is up the top.

Yeah compression is down the bottom.

Hey Mr Meanie, how far through the tripples have you got the forks?

BTW, good luck adjusting the sag on the front, coz it won't. When you make a 'preload' change with the adjuster, measure the extended fork length again for a sour suprise.....

Just do up that ride height adjuster at the rear until it headshakes on the straight.... after your R1 you should be used to it !!!! :wink:

I have reset all the front shock adjusters counter clockwise and the front of the bike bounces easy.

Adjusting only the bottom shock adjuster to the right (clockwise) makes the bike easy to compress but slow to return...in my book that means the bottom adjuster affects rebound or extension. There appears to be 8 clicks on the bottom adjuster (if I heard and counted properly :D )

Adjusting only the top shock adjuster clockwise makes the bike harder to push down, in my book that means the top adjuster affects bump or compression. There seems to be 13 clicks on the top adjuster.

For the purposes of testing it all, I have left the top set to maximum anti clockwise (soft) and I have been playing with the bottom adjuster, one click at a time. My observation so far is it rides the bumps really well but transfers weight quickly under braking and acceleration. On one click the front still rises quickly under acceleration but not as quickly as on zero....lifts the front a bit like a drag car. :D

Just for a joke I rode it at front and back full soft, then front and back full hard. :lol: The thing went from nice comfortable ride to brick.....just about knocks the wind out of you on full hard :lol:

On maximum soft on the lower adjuster, the front of the bike came up quickly. One click clockwise reduced this. Is on two clicks ATM. I expect that on acceleration it will not lift the front as quickly.

My understanding is the preload adjuster on the ZX7R and ZXR750 doesn't actually change the preload but just the height (although it's the same thing until the fork is topped out but that statement causes arguements.... :lol: ). The guy at promecha showed me on the ZXR750 fronts and I imagine that ZX7R front adjusters do the same??. It just screws the body up and down. If you were to take the load off the front and let the wheel hang in full droop, then mark the chrome section with a soft felt marker, and then screw the adjuster up or down...the mark will move towards or away from the fork tube.

Nah I was just playing around with the shocks to find what works, how it feels, what it does etc.

I'm a bit puzzled though about why we are saying opposite things about the shock adjusters.

If you don't mind, would you turn both top and bottom adjusters to soft and sit on the bike and bounce the front.

Soft right? easy to push up and down?

Now turn the top adjuster all the way clockwise.
....can't push it down at all?

Then turn the top all the way counter clockwise...full soft. Adjust the bottom all the way hard, sit on the bike and push down.

Does it compress easier but slowly return??

I just went out again and rechecked. Your all probably right and I'm wrong :lol: ....it appears the bottom adjuster on my bike doesn't do much....and one is leaking :lol:

I was gunna test it for sure by riding it but I'm waiting for the seat to come back from the upholsters today because it had a crack in it.

So what happens when it comes back :D
