QLD police were ordered to abandon a random breath test site and allow
motorcycle club members ride off unchallenged in a dramatic weekend
confrontation in the heart of Surfers Paradise. The incident happened
Friday night when the Finks, Black Uhlans, Lone Wolf and Nomad club
members rode into the nightclub strip in an act of open defiance.

The clubs are allegedly locked in a bitter turf war with the Hells Angels
who have warned their Coast rivals to 'get out of town'. The simmering
tensions have police on high alert and 10 police moved in when the
bikers left the clubs around 9pm.

They intercepted the group of 29 bikers, forcing them to the side of the
road in Orchid Avenue. Within minutes, a police inspector arrived and
ordered the officers to let the bikers go. Police said the site was well-lit,
covered by surveillance cameras and in a public area only a few hundred
metres from the Surfers Paradise police station.

"In short, it was the perfect place to stop them," said one angry officer.
"They were away from their clubhouses, where they hold the upper hand,
and they were right where we wanted them. It was a golden opportunity.
Their every move was captured by camera and they knew it. We had
seen them come into town and we picked the site deliberately. It was
total containment. The situation was calm, there was no animosity. They
had just left the nightclubs so we stopped them for random breath tests,
licence and registration checks just as we would any other road user.
That's our job."

The officer said police would also be able to gather vital intelligence on
club members.

"There were a few new faces in there that we didn't recognise and it's
important to know who's who in the zoo."

But within minutes the regional duty officer arrived at the scene and
ordered police to let the bikers go.

"We were given a directive to just let them ride off. To cap it off, he gave
the order in front of the bikies and they thought it was an absolute gift.
He belittled his own people and made us lose face. The bikers rode off
taunting police, telling them to 'do as they're told' and 'run crying to
their bosses'. They made it pretty clear they knew they have the upper
hand."

Yesterday, Gold Coast district superintendent Brett Pointing said the senior
officer at the scene had to make a decision.

"It was an experienced police officer acting as the regional duty officer
and he was in charge of operations at that time," said Supt Pointing. "He
made a tactical decision based on a range of issues including officer
safety, public safety and operational strategy. The interaction with the
bikies was resolved without incident. In all fairness, this is a very
experienced officer who had to make a decision. It's not an exact
science."

Unless you want all out open war on the streets with the bikies, then yes, they made the correct decision to let them go.

Hmm its interesting the whole concept, in some ways its unfair that everyone else has to abid by the law, but they can get away with other things, But it shows you with enough initative you can over power the government!
