I currently have a portable GPS , the question is putting a ciggy lighter under the rear seat for power to use it on the bike? do i wire this directly to the battery or elsewhere. i don't want to blow anything up both are bloody expensive(bike elect and GPS) .
I was going to do a direct hook-up to the battery but figured i would ask first
I know some of you have done it before.

absolutely

shit no, at the best you'd be looking at a fuse built into the gps->ciggie lighter adapter, but i'd also be putting an inline fuse in there and just a 1amp fuse, max, even a 500mA fuse would be enough.
1. use an ignition powered point
2. use a fuse
3. determing a current draw by the gps and use appropriate fuse.
you can use a direct line from the battery. In that instance, u have to use a fuse due to spikes in voltage/current from starter, alternator, engine etc.
All wired up . It sits nicely beside the gauge cluster, just enough clearance . I did use an inline fuse and the charger for the GPS has a fuse also. Once the camera is working i will post a pic, i even got a no smoking plug! not for any other reason just incase water happens to get near the lighter
