I guess I'd better get a new front sprocket at the service too. The teeth are hooked.

You cant only replace the front sprocket
you will need to replace the lot = new chain & both front & rear sprockets

re: Freaky shifter on '98 zx6r
After getting the chain tenion exactly right (35-45mm so I figure 40mm is optimal) last night, today the shift feels alot nicer and not as sloppy on and off the throttle. I'm feeling pretty silly as the chain was loose because I set it that way after not reading my manual carefully enough.

Good news mate, and I can assure you it will feel even better when you get around to doing the sprocket. At least you found a simple solutionAussie Ninja wrote:After getting the chain tenion exactly right (35-45mm so I figure 40mm is optimal) last night, today the shift feels alot nicer and not as sloppy on and off the throttle. re: Freaky shifter on '98 zx6r
I thought -1 or +2 was the same thing. Its just not as harsh on the chain having to do such a sharp turn.

re: Freaky shifter on '98 zx6r
If the 98 zx6 gearbox is anything like the 98 zx9 be carefull !
What happens to the zx9 is there is to much play between gears putting to much load on the edge of the gears and dogs and once they wear the load goes onto the shift forks.
Then your are up for a new gearbox! That cost me 2k(luckly i found a good second hand box at the wreckers) on the zx9 i had with 30k on the clock.
If it keeps doin it i would be droping the sump for a look, could save yourself hundreds if you get it early.
Hope for your sake its the chain.

the front...
