Exhaust & Maybe Oil Issue

Post by booze »

hey ppl
this morning when i started my GPX i noticed some "black shit" on the ground under the exhaust. i stuck my hand under there and found that there was a hole becuase my hand came back covered in crap :D anyway, the whole is where the black pipe joins the silver "can" i spose you could say so im guessing the black stuff is carbon or something but not oil (well im hoping its not oil  ) because the gases havent passed through the actual can yet? is that what yous reckon too?

ALSO, the last couple of mornings, when ive started her up for the first time the oil light comes on 2 or 3 times whereas it only used to come on once. theres plenty of oil in there so im guessing that maybe when its a bit colder that it needs more of a warm up time for the oil to get circulating or wld there be a more sinister issue?

hopefully my warranty is still current...thanks for your time :D

The first thing to do is change the oil and filter and see what happens then.

Might be as simple as the old oil has past its use by date

I know my old GPX250 had a drain hole around that area to let out any condensation from warm-up. Obviously it would let a bit of exhaust out as well, and the condensation would wash a bit of carbon out, so if it wasn't getting cleaned you might get a bit of a build up.

I think I can remember my ZZR250 having these 'holes' in the exhaust just like your GPX.
They too had the black marks like you have indicated.
To me they were there to allow any water or condensation (if any) to run free from the cavity between the exhaust's outter can and inner can. (sorry about the poor use of tech talk, but I think you understand what I mean) thus preventing rust. So in my opinion, the holes are not related to your oil issue.
As Mario says, change your oil and see how that goes.

Good Luck

yeah there is a drain hole, but its more underneath the bike and theres a lil hose that pokes out...
and the "hole" in the exhaust is only of the right hand exhaust. not the left so i dont think its meant to be there hey...
who knows, ill ring the place where i bought it from :)

When an engine sits over night, the oil will 99% drain to the sump. The oil pressure sender is usually very high up in the engine and so it can take a lttle time to register preassure when the engine is started stone cold. It's set up this way so that any fault cousing a pressure drop will be registered.
As for the black crap coming fron the exhaust, most engines will drip this stuff from the end of the muffler it sits there and idles for a while with cool ambiant temps and a cold engine. A slight leak, or drain hole, will allow this to drip out further p the exhaust system.
Sounds all good. 8)

What's your chain like? loose? ready for replacement?
Could just be chain noise, I've often found rough/noisy gear changes to be due to chain wear.

No worries It's probably just chain Whip, check lube level n adjustment if that doesnt stop it. Reaquaint yourself with the lever, maybe dinner n flowers are in order  Cause it aint happy with what you are doing to it.
