Re. backfire on a ZX12R

Post by kawa zx12R »

:( I have an issue people.... i have a ZX12R that i had for about 3nths.

the bike is great in all aspect, but i have a slight problem... when the bike is reved at over 7000rpm, i have a backfire sound....

Could this be from a leak somewhere lettiing pressure from the exhaust or could it be somthing else.

Please help...

Disable the KLEEN system.
That should sort out the crackling sound.

It still could very well be the KLEEN system!
Tried plugging up the main tube from your airbox?
Do a search on here on the KLEEN removal. It may give you some more info to consider.

Sorry that can cause it on the 12R (Believe me, I have spent many many hours researching this), the early models can get away with it sometimes with a pc3 but not all have been happy with tuning, many problems.

Remember kwakka make and design aircraft and were first to introduced ram air to factory sportsbikes and took the competition ages to catch up and still don't get it right, I think when they add resonators and all the other hardware etc to the air ducts they are there for a reason. The later 12R's do not respond well at all to kleen air mod.

I will attatch what I pm'ed to kawa zx12R

Besides just removing it without installing a PC3 is plain silly.

Ok, can be anything from plugs, computer under the rear seat as some had or developed issues, can also be the full sparkplug stick itself, hell they even had an oil wicking issue on the stator wire and was a recall. Dirty fuel or filter..

I think it is a case of do the obvious first; I am no motorbike mechanical wiz either. But what I can do well is link you to some great WebPages.

Look down the lower right side of this page for recalls/ potential problems...

In the last link don't do the kleen air mod, some speculation as to if it causes misfire, maybe worth seeing if someone has done it to yours previously, also do not bother with the Fitch fuel thing it is crap and exy.

anyway a few hours of light reading there mate and enjoy. Don't forget asking at the USA ZX12R forums, much knowledge is there.

cheers mate, they have to be the best bike on the planet, still.

Air filter??? If you have been doing a lot of bugs they block up and make it run rich....I have seen trained technicians do a service without cleaning out the air filter tsk, tsc, tsc welll it worth a look anyway and you could do the clean mod while you are in their.

Basically the kleen system injects air into the exhaust to reburn any unburnt fuel which is the popping so if it has a blocked airfilter it could be very rich and popping could also be a partially blocked fuel injecter although i hear minimal complaints except from people running dodgy fuel but you never know.

Is the can on tight with no exhaust leaks seeing as how its been going bang a bit lately???

All the premium type fuels have injector cleaner of some sort blended into them because they are designed for high performance injected enines.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?
