Motorcycle Course...

Post by aardvark »

OK, as you may or may not be aware, I got onto the SA Police motorcycle course.

22 applicants, 8 spots. I wont bother going into the 1 day test, but suffice to say I got thru.

Now I'm on the 3 week course where they teach us how to ride properly.

Yesterday we covered a bucket load of theory (cornering, braking, gear changes etc etc), and today we covered a little bit about convoy riding and then went out for a ride.

I thought I was an experienced rider and that this was going to be a breeze. All I can say is... WHAT THE?? If the tests to get your bike licence was like this, we would have 90% less people on bikes, and close to 100% less rider fatalities. Today I got picked up for everything and anything. Not enough headchecks, not enough time looking in the mirrors, not anticipating well enough, incorrect gear choice and the list goes on.

I was glad when our street ride was over!! I'm led to believe it only gets harder. I can't wait.

We also do a thing called the Monte Carlo. It's basically a small slow speed manouverability circuit. It starts with a slalom, then a full lock right 360, a slalom, a full lock left 360, a box test (which comprises a full lock right 180, a full lock left 180, a full lock right 180 and a full lock left 180 to end up in a little box the size of the bike), a tight "S", a ride inside a 20m rectangle box (must take more than 15 seconds to get from one end to the other, without going outside the box or putting your feet down.)

It teaches you the benefit of looking where you need to go, and the art of throttle and clutch control. All this without hitting a damn cone or dropping the bike! A few have been dropped already (300+ kilos of bike!), but at least they don't get damaged at low speed.

Anyway, that's all for now.

that sounds like fun, in a masochistic kind of way :)
all done on a police bike i assume?

even if you dont get through you'll be one hell of a good rider at the end by the sound of it.

What type of bikes are you using down there? Up here in qld they are on honda st1100's.

Good luck with the rest of the course jason.

In QLD the motorcycle course has a theory topic "How to harass sportsbike riders". ........do you have similar   .

Now I'm on the 3 week course where they teach us how to ride properly.{yeah down here thats riding with a straight back that comes about from sticking a large carrot up your arse  ]

Yesterday we covered a bucket load of theory (cornering, braking, gear changes ,kicking little kids off their mini bikes playing with the lights and sirens etc etc), and today we covered a little bit about convoy "Daisey chain :o riding and then went out for a ride in case we could find some 5 year old riding his minibike !!

I thought I was an experienced rider, mono's wheelies, and that this was going to be a breeze. All I can say is... WHAT THE?? If the tests to get your bike licence was like this "free", we would have 90% less people on bikes, and close to 100% less rider fatalities.Put some red and blue lights on my bike and see how every one magicly can see you all the time. Today I got picked up for everything and anything,D&D no licence and generaly being ugly. Not enough headchecks  , not enough time looking in the mirrors at myself , not anticipating well enough for back handers, incorrect gear choice ,tongs and shorts ,and the list goes on.

I was glad when our street ride was over!! as I felt gay enough I'm led to believe it only gets harder with viagra. I can't wait.

We also do a thing called the Monte Carlo The mind boggles . It's basically a small slow speed manouverability circuit with a tootoo and tights  . It starts with a slalom, then a full lock right 360, a slalom, a full lock left 360, a box, full Brazilian , test (which comprises a full lock right 180, a full lock left 180, a full lock right 180 and a full lock left 180 to end up in a little box as aposed to the barrel used in the navy  the size of the bike), a tight "S" test, a ride inside a 20m rectangle box (must take more than 15 seconds before premature ejackulation to get from one end to the other  , without going outside the box or putting your feet down.)

It teaches you the benefit of looking where you need to go for a piss, and the art of throttle and clutch control. All this without hitting a damn cone kid or oldy or dropping the bike! A few have been dropped already (300+ kilos of bike!), but at least they don't get damaged at low speed.

Anyway, that's all for now.
Gee Jas this doesn't seem right ??  hahahahaha

Just playing with you mate . A mate of mine was in the bikes over here, road and trail, and I know that they were boody good riders after that ,thats why their so hard to get away from.

I've heard stories from guys who've done it here and they've said things like at the end of the day of the low speed manouvering stuff they've had half the pegs ground off

Have fun mate, in can only make you a better rider...and if there's anything you can pass on to us it can only make us better too

Thats really good to hear mate well done, my Dad was a bike cop.
The slow speed riding really is a skill, much more difficult than jumping on some fast thing and letting it take you for a ride.
