Avon Azaro AV40

Post by Strika »

Did a little run up the Bells line this morning after a quick coffee at Che Madkaw. Once up the top I stopped at Bilpin for a little lunch, and sitting there, I started pondering the trip back to Melbourne commencing the 20th and which way I was going to go. Looking at the rear tyre told me that with the remaining 9 days commuting and a trip home, it probably would be cactus by Albury. If I decided to go the longer way, it may not make it that far even. So I thought I better hunt around for a tyre.

I ended up at Chivos in Parra. Doug is a typically crusty old bike guy who I just got on great with! A straight shooter and dry as they come!! Loved dealing with him.

I was just about to lash out on another M3, when I spotted this rather forlorn looking orphan of a tyre gathering dust in the top of the rack!!!! So I asked the question what sort of deal he could do to move that onto a rim rather than collect more dust...knowing that the thing had probably been there for three years!!!! Anyway, the $$$$$ were just way too attractive not to grab it!!!!! Way less than $200 fitted and balanced  (I removed and refitted the wheel using his stand). It is a 190/50/17, however it fits up just like the 180 Metz and Racetech. Quite pointy in shape, and no wider at all! Feels very similiar to steer thus far around town.

Now I remember when these where just released, and MCN or one of the Pommie mags did one of there big tests with all the sports tyres, and these things blitzed it! So hopefully it will be OK. Don't really care too much as long as it gets me home!!! I'll let you know how it went when I get back, commuting around syders isn't going to tell me anything.

When I asked him about it....he did look a little shocked!!! Then when I made him an offer, he looked a little happy! Even smiled an waved as I rode off!!!!  I reckon his christmas was three weeks late this year!

I certainly know that if I had an old tyre sitting in a rack, and some tool who thought he could ride on anything wanted it, i'd be feckin happy too!!!!!!

But seriously Gos, if the old Z can punt along on the tyres you run, the new Z will absolutely lurve the Avons!!!!!!!

Well the rear Avon is now well and truly fugged. It was almost on the wear indicators when I left Melbourne, and with gentle throttle usage, lower speeds and some wet weather i have managed to coax another 1100 or so k's from it. So all up it's probably done 2200-2500klms. So all in all not good value for money at all!!!

Grip was fine, although the carcass on the Avons is very squishy and it tended to wobble about in the turns a little more than the Bridgerocks or the Metzlers. But I wouldn't rush out and buy another one.

Running the AM's on the Duc, called Roadriders now, pretty sweet... But then there is not really enough power to spin em up. The front is more scuffed than the back. Mate swears by them. We'll see, but impressed up to now.

If you ever get to see what Gos does on a Metz ME33 laser and some old Pirelli he has taped on the back, you wouldn't worry too much Frogz!! I kinda figure these days if they are round and black and fit the rim, they are probably better than me!
