ZX6 racer rebuild commences.

Post by Strika »

Well I finally found some time today to take a few hours off work and do a little work in the shed.

I had already put the motor into the frame, but had only just sat it in the frame, and not completed the job. So it was sitting in the shed held onto the frame by the two rear engine mount bolts which were not even done up. So basically it's a start from engine almost out job, except I had slid the motor into the frame already.

So today, I did up the four engine mounts, refitted the headers and muffler, radiator, hoses, electrics, carbs, throttle and clutch cables. Then refitted the brakes, changed the sprockets ready for Broadford and refitted the rear wheel. I have the battery sitting on charge as we speak. It hasn't been used for a year now, so i am thinking the battery may have had enough. (it was 12 years old believe it or not!!!!!! and never left on a trickle charge at all. Just raced, disconnected, recharged and raced again so I am happy with it's life  )

Once the battery is charged, or replaced whichever is neccesary, I will give it some fuel and see if this new wiz bang motor lives first of all, then secondly that it lives..up to it's expectations!!!!! :)

Once it's running, I'll then refit the airbox, tank and bodywork in readyness for saturdays ride day at broadford. :)

Well I have had the motor running tonight, however I have a carburation glitch which I couldn't sort. So it's the 9 for tomorrows track day unfortunately! 8/10ths instead of 10/10ths! Bummer.

It runs fine from 6 on, which suggests to me it's just a bit of gunk in the carbs from sitting around for so long. I havn't got the time or the inclination to pull them apart tonight but.

From 6 on though it sounds very very crisp!

Its a 6 isnt it, are you going to be under 6 grand much to worry about it.

I think Uncle Chop Chop has a saying for people like you. HTFU!

Only kidding, hope you get it sorted. Have fun at the track.

Bahaha!! Nah mate! I did run it without the airbox on it, but I don't think it ingested any little tiny wee O-rings Maty!!!
I think sititng around in a cloth for 12 months without draining anything may have gummed it up a tad. So I'll pull em apart and give everything a good clean then see if that fixes it! :)

yea had the same problem on my 6 found out it needs the airbox back on bog stock or it has hesitation off idle and without the mesh inserted in the box it has a flatspot between 3,500 to 7,000 on the road as though it's getting too much air hope this helps

Thanks Sulli, however, mine is a race bike, and as such has none of the polution gear etc and does not require the airbox to be on in order for it to run properly! It's an idle circuit blackage with mine, not a vacuum line issue mate. But thanks anyhoo. :)
