metallic popping sound??
metallic popping sound??
yeah, just when the 'ol gal (4 years old
) has been up for a few days without riding (ie: rain solid for a week!) and you go to start her, on the INSTANT that she fires up, i get a loud BANG that sounds like a backfire or missfire??? what would cause this?? condensation in the system? it's like a LOUD metallic snapping sound?? only thing i've ever questioned about my girls antics! and just every once in a while, like i said, when she hasn't been ridin' for a while, which isn't often!

My 98 does it to. Always makes me jump. I've heard that sometimes you can end up with a smidgen of unburnt fuel in the exhast when you shut down and when you start up, pop. Although I can't remember where I heard this so it might be total crap.
Real bravery is being afraid but doing it anyway.

I am told its the starter gear sticking as she fires

re: metallic popping sound??
The "tiggr" recently (@7 weeks) started doing something similar about 10thousands k's up, I avoid using chokes as much as possible but doesnt even like the choke when its real cold & I'm sorta just working out how he wants to be fired up depending on different sitting temperatures. Even after the 12thou service 4 weeks back n that didnt change it much. Doesnt do it after the motor has been warmed within a few hours or on a hot day. But the "canic" i took him too wasnt real, think I'll go to the other side of Brissie n get alex to do services from now on.

yeah, i've never used the chole either... she always starts on the first go, no probs, but like i said, this weird *pop* when she's been sitting up... not worried about it tho...... i'll ask darcy about it on the next service.....

re: metallic popping sound??
Thats the one thing that pissed me off about my 9R was its tempremental starting routine.
The 6R starts a treat, but remember with the 9R used to nearly have to gauge the weather to figure out which startup routine I would use i.e choke no throttle, no choke and throttle.
I found I would only have to use my choke on the 9R on the most coldest of mornings other wise would use no choke and a smidgen of throttle, but now I am drifting off the subject......

Brent
I get the same thing with my 9, definitely a sticking starter gear on mine as I have to rock the bleeding thing in gear to free it off but it doesnt half go with a bang
Are you turning the engines off with the killswitch on the bars or using the ignition key ??
If you use the killswitch it interrupts the ignition but fuel is still drawn into and out of the cylinders leaving a bit of unburnt fuel in the exhaust.....he go BANG when you start it........DO NOT turn the kill switch off whilst moving and then turn it back on..............blew my last bleeding exhaust in half

I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.

re: metallic popping sound??
Yeah, more than likely a fuel thing...to do with the way bike carbs work..l think theres a spot or two where fuel can collect and just sit...the old English cars that used SU carbs kind of did it a bit too...big backfire here and there on start-up.
So I'm told...
So I'm told...

back when it was legal..us young hoons used to replace car zorst pipes with a 3" (75mm) dia COPPER pipe...nice tone you see
and we would do this ignition on/off trick with cars and apart from the HUGE bang
you would also get...oh about 3 metres of flame outta the zorst
bewdiful.....
don't try it these days with Cats on cars, idiots try it and the cat fills with fuel and then tries to come thru the floor when you hit the ignition
(like rossi blew his can apart)
cheers
