17-08-2007
Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal today announced major reforms to the car and light vehicle registration process which will save NSW families money and time.
The key changes, to be brought in from July 1, 2008 are:
* All new cars and light vehicles purchased in NSW will be exempt from a pink slip for five years, up from the current three-year exemption.
* All cars and light vehicles under five years old as of July 1, 2008 will also be exempt from a pink slip until they turn five years old.
* Motorists will no longer need to wait in a queue to renew their registration.
* All pink slips issued in NSW will be transmitted directly to the RTA electronically, allowing registration renewals to be done over the internet or the phone.
* Motorists will also be able to register their vehicles for shorter periods of three months or six months as well as the current one-year standard.
* Vans and utes will not need a pink slip for five years – up from the current one year exemption.

NSW Registration changes
I just went to look at old bike elegibility requirements online and lo and behold it turns out that the RTA has put in some sweeping changes to the registration process.

Re: NSW Registration changes
No way smitty, there im gonna call bullshit, annual roadworthy checks are worth it if only to keep people from driving around in cars that are fit only for a crusher.
Ive *seen* the condition of some of those clunkers in Vic that are running around, some of those things are shocking.
if they crossed the border, the NSW POlice would remove the occupants and burn them (the cars)
And rightfully so
Rest of it....yeah cant argue, but you have to remember that the NSW RTA adopted the D.R.I.V.E.S System that was flatly rejected by Vicroads and QLD Transport, speaks volumes about em.

Re: NSW Registration changes
You guys in Mexico can get 'temporary' rego, but not the 3 or 6 month options.......at last, NSW has decided to follow some intelligent rego rules that have been used in the ACT for over 10 years now !!

Re: NSW Registration changes

yea i love in adelaide u can do 3,6,9,12month rego..just dont like the lack of vehicle inspections..
the fact that i can make a phone call/internet and get rego in 2min..so if it runs out on a sunday, u just pay and write the number down- then u have 14 days u can ride without the new label (have to prove payment with a reference number tho)

Re: NSW Registration changes
Bah, called the RTA as i had a feeling they are putting the changes in mid next year and not "gradually rolling out the process to make it work everywhere". Yup, June '08 or so its going in, which sucks as i was quite looking forward to putting my bike rego 4 months away from my car rego.

Re: NSW Registration changes
You'll get there mate, next June will be here before you know it. This is one of the best things about shorter rego is getting a decent gap between rego renewals on multiple vehicles, or moving rego renewals away from Xmas !!
