What do you call your grandparents? Confession added!!!

Post by Strika »

Having the bride at my families this year for christmas, she heard my sister referring to my Mothers Father as "Farvie"! To cut a long story short, it was started by my oldest sister when she was really little because she could say Gandfather. SHe also couldn't say Grandma, so she called her GRammy! They stuck with her and all my siblings. Yet my cousins all called them other names. Some Pa and Nanna, some pop and Gran and some Grandad and Grandma. So I was wondering what names some of you call your grandparents. Are there any unusual ones out there? :)

My mum is 'Nan'. My dad died of cancer when he was very young (24) and mum remarried a few years later when I was seven. I have always called my step-father John, and he gets called 'Nandad' by my kids :).

The kids' mum's parents were divorced when we met and her dad had remarried. Ros' dad (who has since passed away) was 'Grandpa' and his wife 'Anne-ma' for a while, but when they got older they used to just call her 'Anne'.

Ros' mum is 'Grandma' and her husband Len is 'Grandad'.

I used to call my mum's parents Granma and Granda, but you really have to read it with a Geordie accent to get an idea of what it sounded like.

My dad's dad also died very young, and I don't remember him at all. My dad's mum was 'Granma Doris'.

Confused? I am...

Me, my mums father was Tata, i think that name was related to his background (Yugoslavian),her mum was (originally enough) Mama.
Dads side, his mum was Nana, his dad, bastard possibly as he ran off when my dad was 8 and started another family.

Mum's parents are Grandma (still going strong at 94) and Pa (best grandparent to ever live).

Dad's folks were Nanna and Pop.

Grandma's mum was Nana Wilson (just Nana) while she was around.

Pretty boring really.

I'm suprised that this topic has as many replies as it does.... I guess it just goes to show how much we generally care for our grandparents.

On my Dad's side of the family:
Grandma and Grandpa

On my Mum's side of the family:
Nanny and Poppy

On my wifes side:
Nanny and Grand-Dad
