Reminds me of a car that was towed to my brother's workshop with a blown gearbox.

Auto gearbox cost over $2k to sort.

13B twin turbo. To get the gearbox out of these particular cars, the oil filter must be removed. Before starting it after the gearbox replacement, the oil level (naturally) was checked. They take 3.2L of oil. My brother had to add 2.5L. Turbos don't like being run with no oil ...

Both turbos were cactus. The quote for repair to the turbos (from someone else) came to around $1600 - EACH.

I don't understand people with that level of mechanical sympathy.

What I don't get is ... who has a 13B twin turbo with an AUTOMATIC gearbox. Pffft.

Jatco boxes are quite common in 13bt's and 20bt's. Serious draggers will run a powerglide though. Most of them like coming up on the converter for drag racing. Sucks if its a DYO bracket though, People in manuals play waiting games with them, and force them to come down off the converter (can't stay on it too long or bang )

worst thing i ever did was missread the dipstick, for some reason the dipstick in this car was refusing to pick up any oil on it for measuring, even after i left the car stationary for about 10 minutes for the oil to settle, cleaned the dipstick and reinserted it. I checked both sides of it, nope, no oil. I then panicked and proceeded to pour an extra litre and a half to two litres into a motor that at best guess required no more than 700ml. Fark that thing smoked like an old chinaman,i think it pumped a bit of oil out of some seals too. i measured the dipstick later and i had to look really really hard to see any sign of oil on there,it ended up being about 3cm higher than the "full" marker. Haven't made that same mistake since

Thats the scary bit about Qld rego rules, vehicle never has to see a mechanic until it's rego is transferrred from one owner to the next, so there's 30 - 40year old one owner shitboxes all over the shop.

One of the few things i like about the RTA is the enforced annual inspections once a car hits 4 or so years old.

we *used* to have annual inspections like that in the ACT, it was a load of horseshit for new cars........when the cook bought her VN in 1992, it was only 3 years old, and the ACT had gone to a different (way better) system, where annual inspections are gone, and inspectors do random checks in car parks..........the VN has been inspected *ONCE* since then, by mistake in 1996 - we turned up for an inspection, the guy says "what the hell does that need an inspection for ? ", he checked the lights, indicators etc then basically told us to piss off !!!!

Its never been inspected since......well, it probably has in a carpark, but no rego inspection notice slipped under a wiper-blade.......we keep good tyres on it so it probably will always pass muster...

The old annual inspection was a huge pain in the arse. There were only 2 inspection stations, and you could literally spend half a fuckin' day sitting in a queue, waiting for an inspection. I am glad those days are long gone.....

The Black Pearl has not been inspected now for over 10 years, its always roadworthy, but keeping 3 months sticker on every year means it may never be inspected again !! Suits me fine, I hate blinkers and horns and all that uneccesary shit !!!
