gpx won't start after ''storage''

had a gpx sitting around for a month or so and stopped starting. Turns over but doesn't start. Checked the sparkies and they both spark. Appear to have compression cos I feel a little something coming from exhaust. Tried some Aeromax and a clutch start, which resulted in maybe one or two deeper notes like she was trying to start. drained the carbie bowls a little (not completely) but didn't get any water, just fuel and a bit of dust. I've kinda run outta ideas here...

fuel gone stale
carbs are blocked up with fuel evaporating and the residue is blocked the jets maby a drain just wont do
battery charged

my first step would be drain fuel and replenish, if that dont work try draining the carbs till fresh fuel comes out, if not then give the carbs a clean

If it was running fine before you parked it then it sounds like the battery, 1 month is long enough for an old battery to loose its charge but not really long enough to have carb probs.You need a certain ammount of charge present for the bike to run & function & that may be more than just enough to crank over the motor.

Agreed, If you wanna test (assuming the GPX runs 12v), check the battery fluid levels then hook jump leads up to the car and crank off that. It may take a while, but it should fire up. Seen this done with a Fairy Blade after a whole UK winter storage. Or, if you can wait, hook it up to a battery charger.

I have a mains battery charger which I have used on it. Although the battery is still the original battery, I think it should still be ok because the bike was being used 3-7 times a week before I left it to sit? Today's job I think might be to drain the carbs once or twice and see what that does for it. The Ninja.org site mentions Yamaha Carbie Cleaner. I've never seen it in a shop but I'm assuming we have that over here as well?

& OLD batteries dont like to sit around with no charge ... could have stuffed it... so before ripping into the hard stuff Jump start & you might be supprised.

Did you get a constant flow of fuel from the bottom of the carbies.
I know the ZZRs have a vacuum operated fuel tap so if there is no fuel in the carbies they are hard to start, and hard to make vaccum to open the tap. That is why they have a position labelled PRI it stands for prime. The fuel will run into the carbies via gravity. Try the tap in this position for ten minutes and then crank it with a fully charged battery. I also leave my battery charger on set to boost, when the battery has been dead. I hope this helps.

See above post... good point .. Maybe check vacuum hose hasn't come off or perished from carb to fuel tap.

Batteries in bike do well to last more than a year or two... All the charging in the world won't save them once the cells are stuffed.
