Thanx heaps for the info. My 98 C has nearly 50K kays on it now. Guess I better start saving for a selector drum and some new shifting forks!! Could have a big job to do next year!
Actually my selector drum is fine, looks pretty much as new. From what I can tell the main problems are with wear on the gears and their dogs, as well as the thrust washers etc on the input and output shafts. A little bit on each adds up to a lot where you don't need it.
I'm taking photos of everything, I think I might put something together about this with photos, diagrams etc.

why....i've got 89K on mine and no problems whatsoever...then again i'm a slow old guy like brett
i dont slam it thru gears on the back wheel....single gear no clutch wheelies only required on a 9, i ALWAYS use the clutch to change gear and try and be as smooth as i can.

What you say is 100% right the nicer you are to these weak gearboxs the better they will last and if ya ride like brett ya may even get 300,000k out of it
You mean theres more then 1 gear ?

fair enough. but i give mine heaps. i'm not so gentle with the poor girl. i'm usually smooth with the changes but do change gears on the back wheel. love it. i dont use the clutch for upshifts when hard charging either, so i guess that may be cause for extra wear.
think i'll still budget for a gearbox measure and overhaul next year.
hey guys, a mate just had the same thing happen to his 98 ZX9R and it was found to be a bent shift fork!! it was jumping out of 3rd when coasting and no real major load on da cog box. he wasnt real happy either as he had only had the bike a month or two. i have found my '01 ZX9R seems to have a neutral between 5th and 6th at times to. good luck with it!!!!!!
Yes I'm still here reading away ......
Stu you'll keep mate, you'll keep.
Tiggr hasnt been finding as many False neutrals of late but then i have been riding "as manufacturer intended" more. 16oooks from new in 8 months maybe it might get better with wear, but i doubt it.
cheers Brett

Three late nights, the help of a good mate, and surpisingly very little in the way of swearing and my bike is back on the road. The longest I have ridden it is to work this morning so I have to see how a longer ride will go, but overall things are looking good...well, nothing has fallen off yet anyway
