It's probably deemed irresponsible now but all my kids grew up clutching the handlebars while sitting on the tank as we zapped around the block.....

Bloody do gooders

..and you can now be fined if your more than 3 meteres away from your car and it's unlocked, presumably even if it's in your driveway.

I was always under the impression that you had to have both hands on the bars!

I lived in Indonesia for a couple of years. Best I saw was a family of SIX on a bike:

Two kids on the tank, Dad, another kid, then Mum........holding a baby!

My father used to drop me off to pre-school when I was four on a registered trail-bike. I would sit in front of him on the (metal) tank and hang onto the crossbar of the handlebars. Used to hate when it would rain though, as it would sting when it hit my arms.

see it also states rider and pillion must keep BOTH feet on the pegs at all times when moving. So when I'm riding down to the GP I can't stretch my legs by taking them off the peg... so stand up I think.. but wait... no it says i MUST sit, facing forwards of course. So how do we stretch our legs again while riding? I guess lots of stopping will be in order...

Does any know why you only have to have 1 hand on the handle bars but you have to have 2 feet on the pegs at all times whilst moving? I know about the whole deal that bikes can easily be directed through weighting the pegs etc... but surely 2 mins with one foot of isn't going to kill ya.....

maybe i'm missing something here??????

I look at it from the point of view of, "What happens if something unexpected happens?" Eg, a bump or obstacle pops up. Especially if I go over an invisible bump (Epping road on the way to uni is a good example, there's like 3 or 4 that you can't see), then I would be far more likely to lose control without legs than without hands (although in most circumstance, who's to really say which is worse?) I figure it's the same reason why you should put you weight through your legs and into the pegs rather having your butt be the primary point of weight transfer from you to the bike. This way, your knees are acting like another set of suspension springs and you and the bike move as one object with one momentum (or inertia, whichever is more correct). I can assure you that going over one of these bumps without your legs doing their job, it feels as though you and the bike are not moving in the same direction. This is a bad thing. :P Of course, I'm here trying to apply logic to law. Which you should never do. At the end of the day I do stretch my legs from time to time on the longer journeys. If I were to get pulled over I would say that I had a sudden-onset, excruciating cramp and needed to relieve the pain in order to control the bike effectively, and that I was planning to pull over as soon as was safe.
See here, young man,

From Conroy's Gap to Castlereagh,
There's none can ride like me.

well you only need one hand ont he handlebars otherwise you wouldnt be able to open your visor, adjust your mirrors, switch from odometer-trip-clock or scratch your nuts/girl bits while on the move. 8)

as for the foot thing, i was coming down bells line of rd yesterday (cop city for some reason) and i was stretching my leg and a nice policeman came around the bend, i gave a nod (even though he was in an unmarked car) and he waved back.

the bits about both feet on the pegs.........thats just aimed at stunters. No copper is going to book you for stretching your legs or standing up to stretch.............unless you have just pulled an insane stand-up wheelie for a k or something....

Lifeofcrimeguy.. yeah thanks I knew all that.... I was being partly sarcastic.. but also asking how it's going to be a zero tolerance according to the news.. yet they consider one hand off is ok.. if you want zero tolerance you have to be all the way in or all the way out.. just my view...

I hope Golsing is right... hope they will be a a little flexible on this subject
