Can anyone tell me what difference it would make to my bike (88 GPX750R) if I used a different oil?
At the moment the mechanic put standard mineral based oil in it. If I was to go to semi-synthetic or synthetic would it make it run any smoother or would it run worse?

Probly won't make much difference if you change it regularly, but personally, I'd run a semi synthetic as a minimum. Mainly as its a better quality oil, will lube a little better and there isn't much price difference with some of the cheaper ones.
Supercheap have some shell semi for $44 atm, when the 20% of sale was on it $35.20..
I use Castrol R full synthetic which is $48 when on sale at supercheap (I stock up)...

Which brand of oil is a whole big can of worms. Supercheap do some great deals on a variety of oils, it's where to go. I use Silkolene Semi synthetic. I've always used Silkolene and have never had issues, and Semi synth as most bikes have a wet clutch and some synthetic oils are too slippery and you get clutch slip.
It's a personal thing in the end, but I'd never go back to mineral oil in any bike.
I think I will give the semi synthetic a go and see how it runs.

as a past GeePeeX750r user...thats fine
but you may find that the ol'girl doesn't like certain brands
mine would HATE anything Shell ..and tell you with a box full of neutrals
and a rattle on startup. Most car engine oils gave me a similar result
...a baulky gearbox and so i settled on better bike oils like
...Motul or Silkolene..the GeePeeX was a nice bike to ride then
The mechanic actually put Shell in it last time they serviced it so I will try a different brand and see how she goes

Was just considering the same thing for my old girl ...
2004 ZRX1200R And on the seventh day Richo ended his work which he had made. Decided resting was for soft cox, straddled the REX and headed up the old road. And it was good
Just make a note of the Gear shift, Try a few different ones & types untill you find what the box likes the most.
Tiggr 02 9r would false nuetral like a SOB 3rd-4th with fully synth, went back to semi 7 it was business as usual.
I'm a Fuchs silkolene man myself, mainly because of a recommendation from someones opinion i value & i can get it at the right price.

I run Shell Advance full synth in my C1 ZX9 gearbox works nicely with it, if I get any crappy shifts it's normally when I'm about due for an oil change. I have had no clutch slip with it either.
