Choke cable NOT sticking

Post by Shifty »

Hey guys

Choke cable on the ZZR is annoying, it doesn't stay in place... as soon as you let go it pulls back like it's on a spring?

Every bike/car I've had with a choke you set it and leave it alone until it's good to go without the choke. What's the g-o?

I would hope that the clutch cable springs back...would make a rather short ride if it didn't...

Thats right it is on a spring, but it shouldn't be pulling the choke back. id say something is lose with your choke lever.

Choke cable :)

So yeah you put the choke on and as soon as you let go of it (to close garage door etc) it stalls/nearly stalls as the choke slides straight back to the 'off' position.

Not overly chuffed about the idea of disassembling that switchblock (I have bad memories of little springs and doo-ver-lackies in there).

Dont suppose you cleaned the switch block recently with armourall or the like eh ?
Its a friction arrangement and if youve taken AWAY the friction well
Throw a hand full of dust in there. (Dont actually do this)

I assure you the ZZR has never been cleaned in the time that I've owned it :P

OK, well aside from having given the ZZR a good degrease and done a half-arsed job of cleaning the wheels, I set about doing what I was actually in the garage for.

First job was to look at the choke cable. I pulled apart the little switchblock and there didn't seem to be anything in there except the little lever, and the cable itself. Looking at the other end under the tank, there's simply the point where it attaches to the carbs to actuate the choke. Where should I be looking for whatever-it-is that makes the choke stick? I've never really though much about it....

I *think* it relies on friction inside the switchblock.

Hm, that being the case I might look at putting something in there to increase said friction :)

Seems like a good way to break it... but a good suggestion nonetheless.. I'll run with it and see if i can do it or if it looks like it'll bust something.
