Regarding compensation, I think you should at least be reimbursed for the track day you payed for and didn't get to ride and the costs to return YOUR possessions.

Change in tangent here but.....
As Dave has said all along he does not dispute the reasons why they are checking up on bikes appearing at the track. There is a solid reason behind it. To stop fraud and theft. Unfortunately because of the circumstances surrounding the mutant it was snared because of the lack of numbers on the frame.
The Coppers you refer to Hoffy are only 2 that work here in Vic dedicated solely to motorcycle theft, fraud and recovery and I applaud them. I have had dealings with the Det that claimed Dave's bike and found him to be completely down to earth and more gung ho than the desk connies I had to deal with in order to get to him regarding a stolen bike. Murders are for the Homicide dept, robberies are for the robbery dept, shitheads are for the poor fuckers out on the street. Believe me that if your bike was stolen you would back these blokes all the way in the way that they approach recovering stolen bikes - whether that be for yourself, the insurance companies or just trying to deter people from moving them between states as track bikes / ebay write offs. I am not a copper. I have no associations with them. I have had certain unpleasantness dealt upon me by them. But I have the utmost respect for they way in which the individuals amongst the Police force carry themselves.
I know that the above quote is a throw away line but really give them a break.
I assume now that anybody knowing of this incident or knowing of the police checks happening amongst ride day and race meets has had they're bikes checked to ensure they carry valid VIN numbers and engine numbers and if not has a valid reason why. Best to talk to the police before they talk to you.
To those of you reading this that do have dodgey numbers or none at all because you know they are hot. I hope you get caught and burn. This is what it is all about.

I agree with *most* of what you've said mate, although over the last couple of days my dealings with the Detective Senior Constable have been less than ideal. I do support what they're doing, but not necessarily the way things are handled during the confiscation or after-the-fact.

At this stage I don't have my bike back in my shed, so I'm going to keep my commentary brief, but suffice to say he has reneged on his agreement to return the bike to me at no cost to me, and he has taken to telling me that he is returning the bike under protest and has pushed to have it forfeited to the crown even though no theft can be proven, yet hasn't had the time to follow up the original builder of the bike and the person suspected of welding the frame. He's passionate about his job but I think at times his passion can be mis-directed.

Can I suggest if they want to check bikes they be a little more fucking diplomatic about it, rather than just flog it without giving dave any paperwork, then saying its his fucking problem when he wants to get the bike back..

I have no problem with them checking bikes, but they need to get their fucking stupid procedures sorted so people like Dave arn't massively inconvenienced..

Like anything, if theyre gonna do it, do it fucking properly..

Possibly time to talk to a lawyer to fully understand the legal aspect of this case then rather than internet experts.
How far back do they have track ownership? I beleive you have provided the previous 3?
If ownership can be proven and that the bike has been in existence in its current form for x amount of years and that the original frame, number or not, does not match any of the hardware fitted then if the rightful owner is an insurance company then of what value is it to them now? Big picture stuff there.
Check with the legal mob, if you haven't already.
From this side of the fence it is easy to comment on what we all see as a clear cut case.
What if it does turn out to be a stolen frame or a fraudulent insurance claim? Who would win? you the owner doesn't and the insurance company would only say "Thanks very much" but it, the frame would be near worthless to them.
