Ignition Advancer

Post by Yankee »

I found this on the 'ol net, and was wondering if it can be done to the 2000 ZX6R? if so, why does it "help" so much? and should i even be contemplating this?
Adjustable Ignition Advancer
To make your own ignition advancer is easy and it's FREE.

Step 1: Remove the lower fairing and front/right engine cover.
Step 2: Remove the rotor by removing the bolt in the center with a 6mm hexagon wrench.
Step 3: Remove the 3 screws holding the ignition plate and loosen the plate.
Step 4: Enlarge the bolt holes in clockwise direction.
Step 5: Reinstall the plate and rotor (rotor bolt torque 25-34Nm 18-25.5lbft).
Step 6: Twist the plate in counterclockwise direction and tighten the 3 screws.
Step 7: Reinstall the engine cover and fairing.
Step 8: Go for a testride.

So, how much should you enlarge the holes and twist the plate? Well the advance should be 3-5° and 1° is almost exactly 1mm on the edge of the plate. So enlarge the holes about 5mm. The best way to find the optimum setting is to dynotest the bike and try different settings. The advance units you can by have usually a fixed setting of 5°. Be weary carefully not to over do it and listen for engine "pre detonation" which usually occurs at low RPM, high gear and high load. On an otherwise low tuned engine you could expect about 1-2 Hp in the midrange.
Or, can you actually buy one from a reputable place? or, can one of these dyno places sorta have a whack at it as well? (obviously once you advance it on a certain type of fuel, that is the one it should therefore ALWAYS be run on?)

If anything like cars, advancing the ignition too much will introduce pinging. Not sure if you could not turn the distributor by default.

Stay with factory standard is better I think...

:? yes you can buy them either from kwaka factory race parts or from z power (i can't remember the name of the brands  ). I was toying with the idea of installing one on the zx7r but the way darcy explained it was that the benefit would only come at the top of the rev range (which i rarely use unless i take up racing), some times advancers are fitted to offset fuel probs caused by aftermarket cans (don't ask me how or why)

Check out factorypro.com. They amoung, other things, make advancers in either +2 or +6. I'm thinking +6 is a race only thing though. They say 1-2 hp gain. Starcycle.com has them for $67 plus $25 delivery gives you $92 aus airmailed to your door. The part number is RTR-KAW-8904.

Advancing timing 2 - 4 degrees can sharpen throttle responce especially from low RPM's, the downside to this is unfortunately pinging when using low octane fuels. Usually 2 - 4 degrees is fairly safe.
The trouble with slotting holes on the advance plate is the accuracy that this needs to be done with is not usually achievable with a file.
There are several after market manufacturers that make these, usually CNC machined for accuracy. Try factorypro.com, or do a search on timing advancers.
Worth the investment in my opinion.

I have a 4 deg factory pro advancer in my 9. As Neil said it does sharpen throttle response and if tuned correctly (usually larger jets) will add a little more top end.
It may sacrifice some low end power, but who needs that anyway...:-)
