Re: OUTRAGE... MOTORCYCLE+PARENTS=KICKED OUT!
I wanted a bike when i was old enuff to hold a licence, I'd fanged around the suburbs on my mates bikes in my school uniform when i could talk them out of their keys but dad was dead against it, even throwing down the ultimatum of " not under my roof"
I moved out age 18 but took 4 years to get onto a bike of my own and promptly rode it over to my folks to rub their noses in it, by then they were so pleased that i was visiting they only voiced polite disapproval.
Looking back i can appreciate my parents concerns, i was bad enuff in a car in my teens let alone a bike (two speeds, accelerating or braking), I was a little more level headed at the age of 22 but still came close to coming unstuck a few times.
I'm MUCH more responsible now.........

Many parents, with time, just learn to deal with it.

Re: OUTRAGE... MOTORCYCLE+PARENTS=KICKED OUT!
Took me 2 years to convince mine. My dad's brothers have both had bad bike accidents and dad wasn't keen on me doing the same.
In the end they leant to tolerate my 2 wheeled addiction but took every opportunity to try to get me to give it up. They cared enough to actually go halves on my first bike so I could afford something decent.
I've since moved states for work and have gone through a couple of bikes, but would think twice about riding up there to see them. We joke about me finding my tyres slashed with a plane ticket on the seat, if I rode it up there, but I don't know how serious they are.

Re: OUTRAGE... MOTORCYCLE+PARENTS=KICKED OUT!
Dad use to ride years ago till he had a big off and hasn't got on since. But every now and then he looks at mine and says he wouldn't mind having a go again.
Mum wasn't a big fan at first but she's come around, whenever she sees the bikes she says "i can put those on ebay for you if you like". But they both know how much i enjoy and now even buy me new gear for christmas and birthdays, as long as i'm wearing the best protection i can they're happy.

Re: OUTRAGE... MOTORCYCLE+PARENTS=KICKED OUT!
My mum is 84 & she & my dad encouraged me to ride when I was 20 & a friend gave me her bike to use indefinitely.
Dad used to hoon around the street on it (without a helmet of course) & push me out the back door with my helmet saying just get out there & ride.
Mum gets all nostalgic when we do the annual Halls Gap ride because that was the first ride she ever did.
She had my dad on the back & reckons he never let her ride the bike on her own. He was always pillion when she rode & apparently grizzled that she was going too fast all the time!
Classic.
She would like to get on the back of my bike (doesnt realize what a crap rider I am) but cant get her leg over with the fake hip.

Re: OUTRAGE... MOTORCYCLE+PARENTS=KICKED OUT!
So many similar stories
What is it with Fathers riding round the block without a helmet ??
My old man discouraged riding , and would show my brother and me scars on his leg from the 1840s when he had come a guttser on some mates bike .
Never stopped him taking a test on any bike I had brought home . Shit myself when he took over a CB1100RB that I had as a test ride and dialed up around 8000rpm and slipped the clutch up the steet , without a lid
Just waiting for him to loop it
Now being a parent , I would be so worried about my kids if they wanted to get a bike . But I know that it wouldnt matter what I said , they would do it anyway and the best I could do for them would be to ensure they had as much riding education as they could get , before they got onto the road .
Perhaps , HappyPants you could ease your folks into a better attitude towards bikes (they are just scared for your safety after all) by doing some rider training and collecting some good riding gear , Before you get a bike ? Cant kick you out for just owning a helmet . Can they ? Too many people get a bike and a helmet and then start saving for the rest of their gear . Bike gear is pretty expensive stuff , having it before you have a bike might give them a bit more peace of mind .
Some one mentioned demonstating to their folks that they had driven a car and not had any accidents . How long have you been on the roads yourself ?
Show em that you are serious about riding and being safe . Then stay at home for as long as you can
Way cheaper than moving out .
Good Luck

Re: OUTRAGE... MOTORCYCLE+PARENTS=KICKED OUT!
Both my parents were dead againt me ever getting a bike. I used to ask Santa for one every year, and was dissapointed every Christmas day when I didn't see one.
So I said "Bugger it, when I can afford it, I'll buy my own".
I said it was payback for them not buying me one when I was little.
The plastic green bike when I was one got me stuck on the green machines and now, nothing else matters.

Been driving for about a year now but I totaled my first car after about two months. It was smashed up from every side and had a tree in the engine.the kid wrote:So many similar storiesWhat is it with Fathers riding round the block without a helmet ??

Re: OUTRAGE... MOTORCYCLE+PARENTS=KICKED OUT!
Like many people here have stated, it's a pretty common attitude of parents. My parents meant it, and i had to move out before i got my bike. My dad is the kind who would have literally smashed it like he said he was going to. After i got it, and told them they 'disowned' me for about 3 months anyway - no communication, telling people they only had "one son now" blah blah blah, kind of drama. My dad was a motorcyclist, and by far the most serious offender. He wasn't always anti bikes, but just didn't want his children touching them. Ironically if i think about my kids and motorbikes i almost have the same feeling, which is a bit hypocritical.
I don't think i have ever seen my dad as happy as the day i sold my bike. Many years of bad blood patched up by the sale.
I'm 28 now, have my own family and haven't lived with my parents since i was 18. However, i haven't mentioned i have a bike again, because i know, when i do, i will be disowned (once again) but this time it will be on the basis of the fact i "need to grow up". Some parents will never deal with it well. Some will build a bridge, some won't. End of the day you need to make a decision on what you want to do.
Also, if you are worried about people telling you how you shouldn't ride a bike, then it's probably best not getting one. More than half the people i know, and meet still decide to tell me about gruesome crashes that a "friend of a friend had" or decapitated rider video's on youtube. I just thank them for there concern and move on.
