I had to level with my parents. Made a deal that if i didnt get a bike till i had my full car licence (without ever having lost it) they would help me pay for it. Mum was always against bikes, even when dad had one, but since i got mine, she is now on her L's about to go for hers P's test lol. now i just gotta get her on to a kwak
you should be able to convince to them that if you prove that you can be responsible, that you can then get a bike, it might take time, but it will work out in the long run, You have a lot of life ahead of you, you doint need to get everything right now

That's probably the reason for their concern. There is no walking away if you hit a tree on a bike and they are much easier to lose control of when you are learning to ride.HappyPants1029 wrote:Been driving for about a year now but I totaled my first car after about two months. It was smashed up from every side and had a tree in the engine.
My father used to ride until his brother killed himself by running up the back of a truck when I was about five years old. Since then he has never ridden on the road. We grew up riding dirt bikes but he was dead against us ever riding on the road and discouraged us from ever getting our bike license. It wasn't until my mid twenties before I went for my license so by then he was more comfortable that I would be more responsible as I had never crashed a car and had very few minor traffic offences. My brother worked in a bike shop and got his license in QLD about the same time as I got mine, but he also had the runs on the board which reassured my father somewhat. I know why he didn't want us to get our licenses when we were younger as I would have no doubt wiped myself out due to the overabundance of stupidity hormones running through my veins at that time. Even though he was still concerned of both of his sons riding on the road he understood where the desire came from and forced himself to allow us to make our own decision.
Your parents are no doubt concerned for your safety and to be honest, if you have been irresponsible enough to wipe out a car in your first year of driving I understand their concern. My advice is to be patient. Wait until you have proven to them you can be responsible and they will most likely relax more on the idea. By then you will be in a better position financially and will be less likely to have a rush of blood to your head and kill yourself. If you are still dead keen to ride, buy Disco's RGV, get an MA license and do a few track days.
