crash knobs for a ZZR250

Post by seraph »

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, and just thought I'd say hello and ask a couple of kawasaki specific questions. Tanyathecheeky tells me this forum is the right place to ask - thanks T :) I ride an '04 ZZR250 that I bought new, which I intend to keep until I head overseas for a year or two next year.

I have convinced my man to learn how to ride (wahey!!) I was thinking of attaching crash knobs to prevent LearnerDamage (tm). I spoke to the guys at whale's kawasaki and they said that crash knobs were never manufactured for ZZR's, and that I would have to get an engineer to look at the bike and weld on some brackets, then modify crash knobs from another bike to fit mine :?

This stikes me as fundamentally ridiculous, expensive, time consuming, inefficient and likely to have me taken for a ride (but not in the good way).

Any ideas or recommendations? and since I've asked several people before, I will head some answers off at the pass - I actually DO want to keep my bike :P I do NOT think it looks better all cracked and scratched :x and yes I DO want to teach my boyfriend to ride, not just kit him up in a short skirt and put him on the back  Bar the above, any help would be appreciated :D

Thanks, and hope to go for a ride with y'all soon. Cheers, -s.

Heya, welcome to the board.

wouldn't surprise me if getting crash knobs was a real pain for the mighty zzr250, there's a real lack of any aftermarket parts at all.

i can't see where you'd mount them either, looking at a photo of mine without the fairings.

Maybe you could get some old ratty fairings from a wrecker ? and put em on for the lessons?

good luck in your search though.

Your shop is on the money - no one makes em for the GPX/ZZR 250's.
As they said you'd have to find someone to make up a brackets and fit some other model oggies.
It sucks but that the way it is. More reason to upgrade as soon as possible - more aftermarket bits ;)

Do you think it would be better to strip the fairings and have him ride it naked? Or is that more likely to damage important bits if he drops it? Can you even do that to a zzr? I think the indicators and mirror might be a problem :?

Where do you think I could find cheap fairings? A wreckers, or trading post or something?

Cheers -S.

Fairings could be available at a couple of the wreckers around the place in varying degrees of usability...

If you find a set that needs some minor repairs, give me a yell...

Welcome aboard by the way... wave.gif

Riding the ZZR naked is difficult.
Indicator's for one are part of the fairing, so you'd need to find mount points elsewhere or buy after market indicators. Headlight looks a bit strange without the fairing too. But whether or not you're worried about looks...

Greetings!

I just did a quick fly around of some of the online accessory sites, and no one has them listed. You may need to make your own.

How? Ummmm... don't ask me, I just suggested the idea.

Why not just wrap the bike in bubble wrap?

You might want to try http://www.findapart.com.au if you decide on fairings, we've used it and it was great.
The bike wreckers in moss st have some, but they might want a bit much(may have crash knobs too???)..

But it might also end up cheaper and easier to have the crash knobs made.. i'm quite sure there are a few guys on here who have the tools and the ability to do so..

Did i just call the guys on here tools??? lmao

G'day, the fairing definately protects all the go bits, but if you decide to try no fairing I have a bracket I made to mount my front indicators. In fact you might even be able to mount oggys the same way. Work calls. Drop me a line if you're interested. Daniel 01 ZZR250

Heya,

I too went looking for the crash knobs when I first got the zzr. I rang everybody, emailed you name it... But all we came up with was to get someone to make them up for the zzr which would cost a bit of money. Which I couln't be bothered paying...

here's an idea:

find out what size engine bolts u have and order a set of frame sliders to suit the engine mounting bolts, but u might need to modify ur fairing.

Welcome, the Mirrors pretty much do all the mounting to the front of the mighty zzr250 so you can leave the top fairing including headlight n whack some after market blinkers on it an your away ...... if that helps ?.
I'm about to ring up Raven racing this week n order some oggys for Janelles zxr400 but they will mount straight through the engine mount. Not sure whats available frame engine mount wise on the zzr250 to use as a mounting spot but I'm sure you could come up with something if you drilled the fairings. Better holes in it then splits.
