hmm i have an iso of windows rc here, just got to pull a finger out and install it i guess.
I wonder how a triple boot (xp/vista/rc7) would suffice....

Re: Computer geeks please step forward.
I'd rather spend my weekend driving to Sydney and back than attempting to do that. Have done it before and I'll be farked if I ever do it again. It takes about 30hrs of status bars telling me how much longer I have to wait before I have to press "enter" and then watch the system re-boot before I have to press enter and accept another "upgrade" and then re-boot before waiting another 5mins, that drags out to 20 before I again click on "I accept" and then watch the system re-boot and off it goes looking for more upgrades on the upgrades it just got and asks me if it should re-boot. It will definitely end badly for this box of electrons if I had to do that again.DMonkey wrote:But slow and wobbly id say you should backup all your data and try a fresh install of XP

I got a sweater for my birthday. I realy wanted a moaner or a screamer.

From the sounds of it, it's not a good idea to have a bar fridge next to your computer then...

WTF was all this jibber jabber about? You computer geeks talk in languages that doesn't make sense to the rest of us. Why is it to get a home computer to do the basics you need to be able to replace parts or add more shit to it, make back up copies and reboot, defrag, or change operating systems. No wonder idiots like me get confused when all of you experts can't agree on the best way to fix a problem.
I always had Macs because they were meant to be computer-moron proof but the old ones couldn't do half the stuff other PCs could and cost three times as much and my last one crashed a lot. So, I crossed over to the dark side and bought some Windows powered shit box and have had nothing but trouble with it since I bought it. I have had to learn how to pull it apart and rebuild it when it breaks down and the thing now lives with no covers on it as I got sick of pulling them off and putting them back on again. Then there's the software configurations that are impossible to understand unless you have a computer science degree and the more shit that you download to get it to do the things you want it to do, the more fucked up it becomes. I'm over it and am contemplating spending the bit extra and going back to a Mac for my next computer. I really don't want to know how it works and I never want to pull the bastard apart, I just want it to work. They seem to be able to do just about everything that the others can do these days so it might be time to go back.
Now if only someone could come up with a SIMPLE solution to S&W's request I might just change my mind.

Well it's as simple as this.........I have sweet FA to do all day Friday and will be in Beaumaris. (going out Friday night)
I will go over to "to slow and to wobbly's" House and save all his files and then reformat the bitch for him
As long as you have the Windows disc and the Driver disc's that came with it
Thats if you'll be home old boy

Take a Ubuntu CD with you and dual boot it for him. At least give the man a fighting chance.

Re: Computer geeks please step forward.
Just a bit of general advice for people...
If your PC shuts down constantly for no apparent reason, pull the side cover off (generally left looking from the front)
and look at the CPU fan and Heat sync (biggest chunk of aluminium in the case with a fan on top) or to the side on some generic crap PC's. Picture below
If it is all choked up with dust because the fuckers are like vacuum cleaners, clean it all out gently gently with a vac (avoid pulling out all the teeny weeny wires)
Intels will shut down when hot to avoid damage
AMD will cook themselves to death
Common at my store and easily fixed
Most tech heads however will never even consider a simple "mechanical" problem like that and charge you $65,000,000.00 to "not fix it"
and eventually make you buy a new one to avoid embarassment

Last time I poked at the insides of a computer with a vac the static from the bristles on the end of the plastic nozzle fried the motherboard - or critical parts thereof.seiko1 wrote:Just a bit of general advice for people...
