Facebook helps nab hoon driver
Confiscated ... Facebook photos proved the undoing of a Castlemaine driver.
Mex Cooper The Age July 7, 2009 - 9:56AM

A hoon driver has lost a car for the second time after posting his driving antics on social networking website, Facebook.

The 20-year-old Castlemaine man last month became the first person to have two cars permanently confiscated under hoon laws.
The man was busted for a second time when photos and video posted on Facebook, of the man doing burn-outs in a ute on a country highway last November, were handed into police.

A magistrate ordered the ute, worth about $21,000, be taken from the young driver and found him guilty of dangerous driving.
The man had already had a Ford Falcon sedan worth about $3000 confiscated by police for careless driving last December.

Senior Constable Grant Healy from Castlemaine police said about 50 hoon drivers were being taken off the roads each week under anti-hoon legislation introduced three years ago.

"This bloke has had plenty of warnings but we have had enough of this type of dangerous behaviour," he said.
"It really does send a clear message to would-be hoon drivers that not only do we have the support of the public, we also have the support of the magistrates when it comes to getting these menaces off the road."

Read "two cars permanently confiscated" I would guess that means what it says

Thanks Rob just skimmed and missed that.

They'd better pay him out (buy the car from him) for what it's worth, no one deserves to get fined $21000 for a bit of hooning. :x

ouch... it never ceases to amaze me how people can be so dumb as to film themselves doing illegal things, I was watching a youtube video yesterday (as I am sure everyone has seen these) of a guy on a motorbike with a digitial speed at times showing over 200km/h on the putty road.

Surely that can only attract the attention of the cops...

Yep Bryan, people have been nabbed for youtube videos and it'd just take one wowser to report that video to the cops for the digital man-hunt to begin; I believe someone even made KSRC "Goose of the week" for the privilege. :kuda:

I saw some stills on the Age website and it looked to be like the guy was in a carpark. If this was the case, then wtf? Actually, checked the attached video and the guy was in an intersection. Either way what essentially equates to a $21000 fine for a burnout seems rather excessive.

People do burnouts on my road. I don't hear them, never see them, just see the evidence the next day. I will admit that it's a pretty ballsy thing to do when the road is only 1.5 lanes wide and bordered both sides by trees and fences. It does only have 3 houses in about 2km though, and sight-lines for miles in each direction so as a burnout venue I guess it's pretty 'safe'.

I don't understand why you'd want to esentially piss your tyres up against a wall though, seems pretty pointless to me, but each to their own I suppose :?.

Castlemaine prides itself on being the 'Street Machine' capital of Australia and I quote: 'Visitors to Castlemaine are greeted by large signs proclaiming the city as the Street Rod Centre of Australia.' It's pretty funny when you can't use all that horsepower for anything .

Maybe all medium-sized country towns need a large public paved/dirt area where people can shred their expensive tyres and practice circle-work without any penaly to anyone or anything except their own necks, machinery and wallets.

It was pretty stupid to post evidence when anyone can see it :?.

We had a fuckhead around the corner do one in our street. He got the message when I walked out whilst he was doing it and threatened to punch his fucken lights out.

That was 6 months ago and the black marks are still on the road. They look shit and devalue the area, which in turn can lead to an increase in other crime.

Goose of the week alright. When I read this in the papers I though why didn't he just post the video to the cops, would have made it easier for everyone.

The penalty seems harsh, but looking at the facts he got caught once before and had his car confiscated. So not happy getting caught once he films and posts it on a public forum, that being facebook. With brains like that the penalty probably isn't harsh enough

Burnouts, have done them in industrial areas when I was younger but never "advertised" the fact

Yes a $21K penalty might seem harsh but he did not learn from the previous one that was around $3K so i think he got what he deserves.
I hope the fucknuckle doesn't go out and buy an even more expensive car. Imagine donating a brand new EVo10 or the likes to the local police.

Yeah, to be fair he gave us warnings, didn’t take bullshite, was lenient at times, helpful, and being the local bull necked fullback ya didn’t mess with him, although many tried airing their grievances with him on and off the field with the same predictable outcome

He knew if he told my old man I would get far worse and that was a very effective deterrent, so just cop it sweet ;)
