Let me begin by saying that there is a good news and there is a bad news.
The good : he is improving and so far no infections the op was a success.
The bad : it was intentional, in other words it was a suicide attempt of the worst kind.
Depression is a horrible thing and if you or someone you know has it, encourage them to get help, otherwise it can result in disasters like this one.
Like waynemorgan says in the other tread, there is some stigma attached to it, but there shouldn't be, I think it should be thought of like you having a common cold and going to the Dr to get the remedy for it.
Come to think of it , you can live with a common cold and it will cure itself giving it time, but depression just gets worse and darker as time goes on if not attended.
