Yeah I saw that ep on tv. I remember thinking to myself, "How long before someone suggests making them compulsory?"

Gos, you should get one, you can have strobes on the front of your donut man vest!
and you can then take the blinkers back off the barge coz they are on your vest. you can have the chequer plate block offs back on

Re: This kid needs to be beaten to a pulp !!!
Hey give the kid a go, at least his heart is in the right place, which is better than most pollies. They'd rather have a GPS transmitter on your bike, multi stressed-wire barriers and front-facing numberplates or an increased hidden (or unhidden) police presence on your favourite twisties. None of those stop you from a 4WD shunting you up the arse.
I'm sure no self-respecting motorcyclist would wear one (even if they were compulsory), and that's another story, but you can't argue with the kid's intentions.
In my opinion most of the problems we face are forward facing though. For one I have never had any near escapes from the rear, all my issues have been from cars pulling out in front. However I gather this situation isn't uncommon and many other riders have experienced the possibility of fast becoming a speedhump for a vehicle that hasn't allowed enough stopping distance.
Most of my issues are from wankers turning like you're not there and generally acting like you're invisible even though you're on a 200kg bike, wearing high-contrast protective clothing and have your headlight on.
