My insurance co say's ok its market value is 4.5K the fully comp insurance with him as the main driver will cost 4.7 K  WTF!

My brother-in-law kept the insurance in his mum's name for the same reason - insurance was more than the car.
Waited till he was 25, then got it in his own name and was able to transfer the NCB
If you have no fear, you're not going fast enough.
Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.

:? 3K sounds fair considering the amount of damage, as Russ said they would not beat that sort of damage.
How's this, go to a wreckers & get a whole rear end ;) cant be any more expensive, the strip & fit the replacements yourself to save $$$.

good idea rob, but the problem is that the boot is damaged as well and neither of us are good with our hands. I'll ask him if he wants to give it a go hehe.. BTW is it illegal in any way or form driving that thing around?

Shit the damage to the boot floor may be a prob :?
As long as all the lights work & he can see through the rear window then it should be fine to drive..... worst case take the boot lid off  & tell the plod that it happened the day before.
