Calling all ZX7R riders

Post by Greenblood »

I need a hand sorting out my forks
I was wondering what ride height/preload settings that are used &
what that equates to in the fork leg in mm, extended or static.
My forks seem to be sitting too high in the stroke & I can't get less than 40mm of
unused travel compared to the old 7 at 27mm :?

From memory I think the stock geometry is the forks protruding 10mm through the triples, but I could be wrong - the manual should tell you for sure. I reckon old mate who rebuilt your forks has used springs that are a bit heavier (or maybe heavier oil) than the old one if you're confident the geometry is set the same (or you've shrunk from not muscling a 7 around for the last few months :)). Is the compression damping set about the same as the old one?

What makes you say it's sitting too high in the stroke? Is it just the unused travel being unused or does it feel shit too?

I have checked with the workshop manual Dave & set them up the same as the old bike
in regards to geometry.

2mm above the triple clamp ( I have them at 6mm to try to get the front down)
7 rings showing for the ride height/preload adjuster
Compression & rebound is midway on both

The issue I have is the front sits too high & doesn't compress much
unused travel is 40mm previously on the old bike it was 27mm at the same setting.

When I am riding the bike it understeers & feels like its pushing wide in mid. fast corners.
it doesn't seem to compress the front when tipping in & loading up the front, just stays up.
I have jacked the back up to compensate but it just feels bad.

Springs are standard only the valving has been changed & the piston.

It sounds to me like the spring is wrong Joe - old mate hasn't fucked up and put a longer or heavier spring in accidentally has he? If the valving was really small (or the oil was really thick) I guess you could get the same result???

Well I think it's sorted :)
I droped it in on saturday & Nick stripped the forks & found a spring collar
installed upside down :x Giving the spring 9mm preload that had the front
too high. I haven't had the bike out but riding back from Teknik it felt better :kuda:
