Cath wrote:Interesting approach, photomike - if it's competitive, it's a sport. Pretty simple line. But then how do you decide which sports are Olympic-worthy and which aren't? My preference would be to say that if the winning factor is measured it's in - if it's judged, it's out (i.e, 200m freestyle = in, synchronised swimming = out).
Cath. on that basis we would lose diving and gymnastics to name a couple yet keep yachting, we would lose dressage in the equestrian (good it bores me shitless anyways) yet keep the cross country in said sport...

How do we go with boxing, unless it's a KO or TKO then it's a draw? :) Ditto Karate, Tae Kwondo and male groping (Wrestling) I guess..

Break out the glasses King Nick is right, tis a fine line indeed.

I understood a sport to be a measure of performance either against a competitor or defined set of rules whereas an activity is anything that can be done wearing jeans thus not qualified to be a sport :P

Hmm well I go riding a lot in bog standard jeans, no Mick Doohan that's for sure but no reason you "couldn't" do a lap of PI in jeans.. so therefore motorcycle racing could be an activity? :)

Cath - your rules actually reflect the original Olympic rules, from the Greeks. Events were measured, not judged. Makes it simple and easy....but not much good for TV !!

Or really take it back to the Ancient Games ...... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Ol ... mes#Events - then you would get some TV interest !!
I've spent over 40 years of my life riding bikes .... the rest of it, I wasted ..

A simple textbook definition is:

Sport: - requires physical activity, has a clearly defined set of rules, requires skill and technique, involves competition, has a controlling organisation, has an accepted code or behaviour, has an end result and has public acceptance.

For a physical activity to be classified as a recreation, it must be optional for you to participate. ie. sport requires commitment so you are committed to attend games/training, but you chose whether or not you want to participate in recreational activities.

You should have all learnt this in year 8 in Health when you were studying the Active Lifestyle topic. It shows how much you lot paid attention in class.
