Taken from a press release from the State Transport Ministers office this morning:

We have been working closely, over the last few months with the NSW Police and the National Roads and Motorists Association, looking for ways to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries being sustained by the states motorcyclists.
The NSW Police figures show that "the contributing factor in nearly all motorcycle accidents is speed and too powerful motorcycles."
The figures clearly show a reduction in the number of accidents and injuries for Learner riders since the introduction of mandatory rider training before a rider is allowed to ride on the road.
Following on from these facts, the decision has been made to change the current license structure and introduce a 3rd class of rider license Unrestricted Rider "UR".
The new license structure is as follows:
LR - is for Learner Riders and has not changed ie still the same motorcycle restrictions apply.
R Rider - This class is the natural progression for learners however this class is now restricted to a maximum 600cc's for all sport type motorcycles.
UR Unrestricted Rider - This is a new class of license that will be required for any rider wishing to ride a sports style bike of greater than 600cc.

To obtain a Unrestricted Rider (UR) license a rider will have to pay for and attend an approved Advanced Rider Training course.

This new change to the license structure is to be introduced on the 1st of September 2005 and within 12 months of its introduction ALL persons currently riding sport type motorcycles greater than 600cc MUST have completed this course.

The minister states that the revenue generated from the training and the new licensing scheme will be used to promote better motorcycle awareness and safety throughout NSW.

Furthermore, it is believed that this is a world first and NSW believes it will be setting a standard in motorcycle safety that will be followed not only nationally but internationally.

i wish i could believe these pollies and that there is some kind of nexus between more fees and rider safety....not!

and whats with the retrospectivity of the proposed change, can just imagine the waiting list and price hikes associated with getting people on these courses in a place like Sydney. Its gonna be a pretty steep charge if he thinks he going to raise revenue after the cost running a relatively expensive course (can you imagine the insurance )

and how is he defining 'sport type' motorcycle...any one that rides with a full face helmet?

i notice there's no mention of removing guilotine wire barriers from NSW highways

pls don't get me wrong i am all for proper rider training, but this stinks of a cash grab. And its going to fuck the resale values of zx636's,7's,9's,10's and 12's as well as the other lesser brands

freedom and sunshine exists north of the tweed and you're always free to conduct raids on the Nth NSW roads

A mate of mine that lives in Penrith bought a VTR firestorm a while back (why? I don't know) but to save stuffing around and having his P's for 3 years etc flew up here and got it sorted in 1 weekend...

- Flew up on Thursday night
- Applied for his Learners permit Friday morning
- presented a form to say he was living with me
- Got his learners straight away...
- Turned up and did QRide on Saturday morning and passed later that day
- Went back into Qld transport Monday morning and walked out with his open license...
- Flew back to Sydney Monday night...

I think he just has to transfer it now...

There is very little difference between say a zzr600 & a 1000cc bike doing a 0-100kmh. Most modern sports bikes >600cc are fast enough to be dangerous (especially for newbies). I still feel safer on a bigger bike then a 49cc scooter.

It's not just the speed that's the contributor but stupid cagers!! and people who lack self control on their bikes.

1) Did you know that "contributing factor" is bullshit. Speed is always a contrbuting factor, if you are going 15 km/h and hit a cat then it is a contributing factor. The problem is that pollies and police can blame speed everytime and do. If we are riding to the speed limit and hit a diesel spill then you could say that we should have been riding slower to suit the conditions.

2) Revenue will spent on motorcyclists. Also bullshit. Do they think that we believe that the money will be spent on repairing roads, removing dangerous furniture and better training car drivers to be aware of us?

3) You are not a genius if you figure out another way to make money and someone else in the world decides to do the same, so don't pat yourself on the back.

When will we see some work/money that is a direct result of communication with motorcyclists. How many people out there on R1s and 10Rs believe this advance riding course (most have probably already done one) is what they need?

this is all so annoying!

i kno this is possibly an april fools, haha how bout the goldwing racers in AMCN??
BUT..i actually think it would b a good idea, to have say a 3 teir system, pass once u can ride up to say 400cc, u need to upgrade to ride up to 750cc then the next step is unrestricted, however NO money goes to gov't, and its run by acredited schools..i think it MAY help reduce the toll a bit??

But why should this only apply to motorbikes. They make you get a special license to drive big arse trucks because it requires special skills. So to drive a turbo charged subaru requires its own skills and as such you should have a special license. Who is going to tell me that a daihatsu charade is as hard to drive as a Land Rover or XR8?
